Abstract: | The intertidal area is a practical representation of the intertidal areal extent (mainland) within the West Coast of the Waikato Region. It was created using information from Waikato Regional Council (WRC) datasets and recent (2002 to 2012) aerial photography and lidar data. Due to a number of factors the mapped intertidal area is likely to be an underestimate of the actual area. |

Statement: | The intertidal area is a practical representation of the intertidal areal extent (mainland) within the west coast of the Waikato Region and is suitable for viewing at a scale of 1:5,000 over WRAPS 2012 (Waikato Regional Aerial Photography Service 2012) aerial photography.
The intertidal area was created using information from Waikato Regional Council (WRC) datasets and recent (2002 to 2012) aerial photography and lidar data. The high tide/shoreline boundary was digitized at a scale of at least 1:3,000 using WRAPS 2012 photography and recent estuarine vegetation data (2012). The high tide boundary was snapped to the landward edge of the estuarine vegetation polygons where there was no obvious non-vegetated intertidal area landward of the estuarine vegetation.
The lower limit of the intertidal area was digitised at a scale of 1:3,000 or greater from aerial photography. Mapping primarily utilised 2012 WRAPS photography, cross checked against photography from 2003, 2006 and 2007 and WRC lidar data where available. The area digitised is likely to represent a tidal level above a true low water spring tide level due to photos not being taken at the exact time of spring low tide. The full width of the intertidal zone is therefore likely to be underestimated.
There will also always be inaccuracies associated with defining the lower tidal limit near estuary channels as these are naturally dynamic features. Many intertidal “islands” and sand flats are highly dynamic, particularly near estuary entrances. Where there was a significant difference in the size and shape of the intertidal area over time, the most recent data was used (i.e. WRAPS 2012 photography). |
---|
Other Information: | Geographic extent is the Waikato Region.
Positional accuracy is variable - between an approximate horizontal accuracy of +/- 3 m to approximately +/-10 m at best for data captured from aerial orthophotos and likely to be less accurate for data captured from other sources.
Data quality is variable.
This dataset will be appended to and updated as further historical data or aerial photography is sourced.

Data Disclaimers : | Please note that the indicative line work does not constitute the actual legal boundary of the coastal marine area. CMA is defined as mean high water springs, which can change over time and has not been adequately surveyed across the region. The stream mouth boundaries were established at a scale of 1:50,000 in 1994. Issues relating to the CMA are under review over the next year.
The standard Waikato Regional Council Disclaimer applies to this data “While Waikato Regional Council has exercised all reasonable skill and care in controlling the contents of this information, Waikato Regional Council accepts no liability in contract, tort or otherwise howsoever, for any loss, damage, injury or expense (whether direct, indirect or consequential) arising out of the provision of this information or its use by you.” |

Data Use Limits : | Data is available for mapping and analysis at a scale of 1:5,000 and with regard to the information in the Statement and the Other Dataset Information. It was captured as a desktop exercise so site specific ground truthing should be undertaken if the results are critical. |
