Significant Natural Areas - Lake Ecosystems - GIS Layer

File ID: E9F12D3D-5ED8-441A-B30D-80DAEC6BB95D
Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: This data set forms part of a group of data sets of significant natural areas (SNA) of the Waikato Region, which are part of a project for identifying, assessing and prioritising SNA for biodiversity management.
Statement: The data set was originally created for the production of maps of the lakes assessed for the Waikato Regional Council Technical Report 2011/05: "Significant Natural Areas of the Waikato Region: Lake Ecosystems". The spatial objects in the data are only an indicative spatial representation of the 96 lakes, or lake groups (85 natural lakes (six different types) and 11 human-made lakes) assessed in the report. The data set is comprised of a GIS layer containing 96 features representing the lakes, or lake groups (85 natural lakes (six different types) and 11 human-made lakes) of the Waikato Region assessed for natural significance, as part of a project for prioritising natural areas for biodiversity management. There are 5 multi-part features and 91 single-part features in the data set. The data set serves primarily as a reference list of the lakes in the Waikato Region that have been assessed for their natural significance, scored and ranked for prioritisation for biodiversity management. The data set should be used for indicative purposes only. Any use of the data for legal proceedings or purposes should be supported with field checking or validation of the relevant areas. The data may be used in conjunction with other SNA or biodiversity related data for assessing the potential biodiversity values and/or management needs of particular areas of the Waikato Region. The data set can be used in the production of maps, but it is recommended that the maximum scale used for any maps is 1:50,000 (NB: maps of the lakes are available in Appendix 6 of WRC Technical Report 2011/05: "Significant Natural Areas of the Waikato Region: Lake Ecosystems".

Abstract: Lake or lake groups of the Waikato Region.
Statement: The data are of 96 lakes across all local districts of the Waikato Region, excluding the Thames-Coromandel District. The data were acquired as part of WRC's project for the identification, assessment and prioritisation of significant natural areas for biodiversity management. The LAKE_NAME, LAKE_TYPE, TENURE, FINAL_SCORE and RANKING attributes were collected and/or derived primarily by Wildland Consultants Ltd. between 2008 and 2010. Details of the acquisition methods for these attributes are provided in the Waikato Regional Council Technical Report 2011/05: "Significant Natural Areas of the Waikato Region: Lake Ecosystems". The TA_NAME and ZONE attributes were derived in GeoMedia Professional, using spatial aggregation queries of the GIS_ALL.TERRITORIAL_AUTHORITIES and GIS_ALL.RACS_ZONE data sets that overlapped the SNA_LAKES data set. The accuracy of the TA_NAME and ZONE attributes is described in the metadata of the GIS_ALL.TERRITORIAL_AUTHORITIES and GIS_ALL.RACS_ZONE data sets from which they were derived. Details of the accuracy of all other attributes are provided in the Waikato Regional Council Technical Report 2011/05: "Significant Natural Areas of the Waikato Region: Lake Ecosystems".
Other Information: Positional Accuracy: Except for lakes Disappear, Patetonga and Puketerini, the spatial objects that represent all other lakes in the data set are derived directly from GIS_ALL.HYD_50K_LAKE, and therefore retain the same positional accuracy as the source data (which is as per LINZ NZTopo260 1:50,000 data). The spatial object representing Lake Disappear is derived from the NZTopo260 series v.15 depression contour feature, and thus retains the same positional accuracy as the source data. The spatial objects representing lakes Patetonga and Puketerini appear to have been digitised by hand off the 2002 WRAPS, and therefore the positional accuracy of these objects cannot be verified. The spatial objects derived from GIS_ALL.HYD_50K_LAKE are dated current as at 2000 (according the GIS_ALL.HYD_50K_LAKE metadata). The spatial object for Lake Disappear can be considered current as of 2008 (the date of NZTopo260 series v.15), and the spatial objects for lakes Patetonga and Puketerini can be considered current as of 2002. The LAKE_NAME, LAKE_TYPE, TENURE, FINAL_SCORE and RANKING attributes were collected and/or derived primarily by Wildland Consultants Ltd. between 2008 and 2010, and are current as of April 2011. The TA_NAME and ZONE attributes were derived from the GIS_ALL.TERRITORIAL_AUTHORITIES and GIS_ALL.RACS_ZONE data sets, respectively, on 22 June 2011. At this stage, it is not known if or when any part of the data set will be reviewed or updated in the future. However, it is recommended that the spatial objects are reviewed and possibly updated using the newer NZTopo50 data. Apart from 2 lakes (Patetonga and Puketerini), the spatial objects for all other lakes in the data set were derived directly from NZTopo260 1:50,000 scale data. Therefore, the quality of the spatial objects is equivalent to that of the source data. It is recommended that the spatial objects are reviewed and possibly updated using the newer NZTopo50 data. The quality of the TA_NAME and ZONE attributes is equivalent to that of the GIS_ALL.TERRITORIAL_AUTHORITIES and GIS_ALL.RACS_ZONE data sets they were derived from. Details of the quality of all other attributes are provided in the Waikato Regional Council Technical Report 2011/05: "Significant Natural Areas of the Waikato Region: Lake Ecosystems". The spatial objects in the data are only an indicative spatial representation of the 96 lakes, or lake groups assessed in the report. They do not represent the full extent of the area assessed for each lake. Details on the area and other factors assessed for each lake can be found in the Waikato Regional Council Technical Report 2011/05: "Significant Natural Areas of the Waikato Region: Lake Ecosystems". Geometry and connectivity were validated in GeoMedia Professional v.06.01.06.19. No errors were found. For the LAKE_NAME, LAKE_TYPE, TENURE, FINAL_SCORE and RANKING attributes, please consult the Waikato Regional Council Technical Report 2011/05: "Significant Natural Areas of the Waikato Region: Lake Ecosystems". The non-spatial attribute data table can be exported into an MS Excel worksheet. The spatial data can be used for creating maps, along with any of the attributes displayed as labels (maps of all 96 lakes are provided in Appendix 6 of the WRC Technical Report 2011/05: "Significant Natural Areas of the Waikato Region: Lake Ecosystems". At this stage it is not known if or when any part of the data set will be reviewed or updated in the future. However, it is recommended that the spatial objects are reviewed and possibly updated using the newer NZTopo50 data.

Data Disclaimers : The following disclaimer must accompany any outputs of the data, and be provided to any users of the data: The "Significant Natural Areas: Lake Ecosystems" data are derived from analysis and interpretation of aerial photography along with information from ecological reports and data (where available), local ecological knowledge and, where possible, field surveys. The data comprises an extensive yet provisional inventory and ranking of SNA of lake ecosystems of the Waikato Region. It is subject to revision through consultation with District Councils and other appropriate sources. The Waikato Regional Council strongly advise that the data be used only in conjunction with subsequent field surveys, especially if the data will be used to help with decisions on resource consents, the development of district plan and regional plan schedules, or funding priorities. The absence of an existing natural lake ecosystem from the "Significant Natural Areas: Lake Ecosystems" data does not imply that such an area is not, or cannot be considered, a significant natural area, a significant area of indigenous vegetation or significant habitat for indigenous species. Such areas should be assessed when and if required."
