Waikato Regional Plan Geothermal System - GIS Layer

File ID: 235DE5C0-58A0-4EA9-BEF0-45A56B8C0B49
Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: The data set maps the boundaries of the large and gives indicative locations of the small geothermal systems in the Region.
Statement: Large geothermal systems are mapped to show where the geothermal rules apply. Small Geothermal Systems are identified by a grid reference. They are not mapped in the Waikato Regional Plan due to insufficient information available regarding their areal extent.

This layer is the result of the WRP Variation 2 decisions that were issued in June 2004. The layer may be updated from time to time by either order of the Environment Court or changes to Regional Plan but this will require a legal process to be followed before the change is made. Therefore before making decisions based on it check with WRC Policy Group or WRC Geothermal Scientists.

Applications: Determining the areas within which objectives, policies, and methods relating to geothermal resources in large geothermal systems apply. Used in consent officers reports, plan effectiveness monitoring, reporting state of the environment information, prioritising non-regulatory initiatives by Waikato Regional Council. However there are often other matters to be taken into account so before making decisions based on this data check with WRC Policy Group.

Abstract: Boundaries of large geothermal systems in the Waikato Region.
Statement: Large geothermal systems are mapped to show where the geothermal rules apply.

The Geothermal System boundaries were digitised from lines drawn on hard-copy maps by WRC Geothermal Scientist Katherine Luketina and GNS Scientist George Risk. The dataset is based on information from GNS scientists, and WRC Scientists, monitoring staff, and contractors.

The positional accuracy of geothermal system boundaries is dependent in part on the accuracy of resistivity contour maps produced by IGNS which formed that basis for the derivation of the maps.

The derivation of the lines on the map is provided in detail in:
DOCS#609131 “Boundaries of Horomatangi, Tokaanu-Waihi-Hipaua, Waiotapu-Waikite, Waimangu and Atiamuri Geothermal Fields, GF Risk (2000), IGNS Client Report 2000/22.
DOCS648018 Boundaries of Horohoro, Te Kopia, Orakeikorako, Ngatamariki and Reporoa geothermal fields, GF Risk (2000), IGNS Client Report 2000/131.
DOCS#608923 Geothermal System Boundaries for the Waikato Regional Plan, Environment Waikato, May 2001.
DOCS#925710 Boundary of Tongariro Geothermal System, GF Risk 2003, IGNS Client Report 2003/144
Other Information: Geographic extent: Geothermal sites within the WRC region, mainly in Rotorua and Taupo District.

Data Quality:
The accuracy of the large geothermal system boundaries is suitable for scales of more than 1:50,000 reflecting the scale of the maps that were used to draw the boundaries.

The accuracy of the Small Geothermal Systems is likely to be no better than +-100 Meters and should be suitable for use at scales greater than 1:50,000.

Attribute Accuracy:
No quantitative checks on attribute accuracy undertaken. Attribute accuracy was checked by examination of the draft maps by RIG and Policy Staff and Public consultation. Any identified errors were checked and fixed if necessary. Attributes entered as listed in the Regional Plan.

Completeness:

Geothermal System Boundaries:

All known large geothermal systems are included. Dataset is complete as per Proposed Waikato Regional Plan Proposed Variation 2: Decisions Version, June 2004.

Logical Consistency:
GIS tools used to clean the data include validate geometry, fix geometry, validate connectivity and fix connectivity. Attributes correct at the time the Regional Plan was written.
