Coastal Structure Data Set

File ID: F651ADA0-8FB0-4B32-8865-1CD063C16673
Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: Coastal structures in the Waikato Region in 1994/1995 and 2006. The positional accuracy of the older survey is quite low. The more recent data only covers a limited area (essentially just the top of the Coromandel).
Statement: This was previously two seperate datasets: Coastal Structures Dataset 2006 (EWDOCS # 1279679). Coastal Structure Dataset 1995 (EWDOCS # 881942). A more detailed description of the data set and associated limitations is available in EW DOCS #637369.

Abstract: Updated version of the previous 1995/1996 Coastal Structures data set.
Statement: This data has been recaptured using GPS and ESRI’s ArcPad software. Data capture is taking place by doing a section of coastline per year. Coromandel Harbour was collected in 2006/2007 summer. Coromandel Peninsula North of Coromandel Harbour in the West and Mercury Bay in the East has been captured in 2007/2008. New data will be appended as it is captured. The data was acquired using GPS and ESRI’s ArcPad 7.0.1 software. The data will be collected by surveying a section of coastline per year with each section to be updated every ten years however the project has been put on hold due to budget constraints in early 2009. This covers all coastal areas from Coromandel Harbour in the west and Mercury Bay in the east accessible by road. The dataset will cover the whole of the Waikato Region. Only part of the data set has been completed. Of the areas that have been completed only structures that were accessible by road or foot were surveyed. This data is to be updated on a ten yearly basis.
Other Information: Has the positional accuracy of +/-10m. Data was collected using a Trimble GPS Pathfinder XC receiver and Trimble GPSCorrect for ArcPad. It was post processed using Trimble GPS Pathfinder office. Data on the dimensions of structures is only approximate, particularly for large structures. Environmental effect and physical condition was based on a rapid visual assessment. It is very difficult to assess such impacts on a single field visit.

Abstract: This data set was derived through field observations undertaken in the summer of 1995. A total of 2847 structures were identified with full descriptions of their purpose, size and condition.
Statement: This layer has been replaced by GIS_ALL.COASTAL_STRUCTURES. The data covers all coastal areas of the Waikato Region accessible by road, and enclosed estuary shorelines, which were accessed with a small boat. This was developed from a survey taken during the summer of 1994/5. Re-surveying of coastal structures will be taken every 10 years. Field staff recorded data on structure location using a 1:25,000 NZMS map. Observations were made on site with a photograph also taken of the structure to provide a visual record. Field staff recorded data on structure location using a 1:25,000 NZMS map. Observations were made on site with a photograph also taken of the structure to provide a visual record. Data on the dimensions of structures is only approximate, particularly for large structures. Mistakes were evident in some cases in recording of map references, and these were corrected where possible. Data on the physical condition of the structures is now out of date. Environmental effect was based on a visual assessment by a student. It is very difficult to assess such impacts on a single field visit. This data is a spatial snapshot taken between December 1994 and April 1995 of the Region’s coastal structures. This data will be updated in the future however the exact date is unknown.
Other Information: This has the positional accuracy of +/- 50m. The data form is digital, supplied as an excel spreadsheet and then transferred to a MS Access warehouse using Geomedia Pro. The data can be transferred into other GIS formats if required
