Catchments - GIS Layer

File ID: 8B6C8F5D-6E54-4D50-A251-289AAEF0437C
Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: This layer contains catchment polygons for part of the region as captured from manual digitising.
Statement: This dataset covers part of the Waikato Region as defined by the Statistics New Zealand Local Authority boundaries for the Waikato Region. The accuracy of this dataset is determined by the accuracy of the 1:50,000 topographic sheets and the ability of the digitiser to determine catchment boundaries. The data is very subjective in areas with sinkholes, underground streams or drains. The spatial accuracy of the boundary could be improved, for example with the use of local knowledge or the use of up-to-date aerial orthophotos. This spatial aspect of this dataset is incomplete. It is a working dataset and will be added to or modified as and when required. Attributes for all polygons have been collected as described above. This dataset is currently under review and it is anticipated that it will be replaced with a more accurate layer as derived from the regional Digital Elevation Model. As noted before users of this dataset should be aware of its limitations with regard to spatial accuracy. This dataset was captured from 1:50,000 topographic sheets using contours and watercourses as visual aids. Catchment polygons are therefore no more accurate than the standard displacement error of these features represented on a 1:50,000 map (for contours this level of accuracy is described as: 90% of well-defined features are within ± 22m of their true position and within ± 10 metres of their true height). However the actual accuracy of the spatial data is estimated to be +/- 200 metres at best. The data is very subjective in areas with sinkholes, underground streams or drains.

Hierarchy Level: feature Hierarchy Level Name:feature of Catchments - GIS Layer
Abstract: Catchment polygons for part of the region and associated attributes.
Statement: The main attribute (Name) was determined by overlaying the polygons on NZMS260 map sheets and identifying the main watercourse in that polygon. The accuracy of the derived attribute information for each polygon is unknown.
Other Information: Logical consistency is high. Spatial data for this layer was captured from 2000 onwards by digitising from 1:50,000 topographic sheets. The dates of publication for these sheets are unknown. Catchments are added to the layer as required. The data are stored in an Intergraph GIS format. The source data is stored as polygons in Waikato Regional Council's Oracle database.
