Coromandel Coastal Wetland Inventory

Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: Inventory of coastal wetlands in the Coromandel region.
Statement: It includes an assessment of their current state, value and associated threats. The wetlands have been assessed on the basis of an examination of topographic maps and aerial photographs and existing information. This information is interpreted to determine significance, management priorities, restoration and protection potential. For the purposes of this inventory, coastal wetlands have been defined as areas of permanent or seasonal water-logging, formed due to the presence of coastal features and/or current coastal processes. All scales of wetlands that can be identified from aerial photographs have been included. 73 sites have been identified and information recorded on: name (after the river or stream that has produced the wetland); location (immediate region in which the wetland is located, defined by coastal boundaries); grid reference (NZMS 260 series topographic maps); aerial photographs (held by Waikato Regional Council); area (ha); ecological district (levels of ecological classification of land according to geological, topographical, climatic and biological features and processes). Existing data for each site has been collated and interpreted to derive the following information: classification type (estuarine wetlands, intermediate type, lagoonal wetlands); significance; natural character (proximity and extent of development and natural patterns and processes); intactness; riparian vegetation; condition (natural character and intactness); ownership; protection status; threats/issues (based on surrounding land use); vulnerability (appraisal of existing and potential threats in terms of wetland susceptibility to degradation); restoration potential (principal requirements of restoration and protection of the wetland); management score (condition and vulnerability); and management priority (derived from the management score). Inventory compiled July 2000. Not all data fields included in the “dossiers” for each of the 73 sites are complete (e.g., significance of each wetland; ownership). This project has been completed. This data is used to improve knowledge of the locations, current state, values, threats and management requirements of coastal wetlands on the Coromandel Peninsula.

Abstract: Coastal wetland within the Coromandel region.
Statement: Data is stored in Word and Excel documents Initial identification of coastal wetlands was from topographic maps. Secondary identification was from aerial photographs. Existing information was collated from a variety of sources (e.g., Coastal Resources Inventory; District Plans; Sites of Special Wildlife Interest; Protected Natural Areas). A “dossier” was then created for each of the 73 identified sites. Criteria and a scoring system for ranking each of the 73 sites were developed, based on classification type, natural character, intactness, riparian vegetation, condition, threats/issues, vulnerability, management score and management priority. Information on the wetlands (including information used to develop the ranks/scores for each wetland) is not derived from field based site assessments.
