| Abstract: |
This is a GIS dataset showing landcover in the Taupo catchment as at January 2002. It was designed and created primarily for use in the Lake Taupo Water Quality project. |

| Statement: |
The data comprises area features with attributes of landcover class, version, and area in square metres. The primary purpose of the dataset is to update the 1996/1997 LCDB measure of pasture by incorporating new exotic forest blocks and omitted patches of scrub and indigenous forest into the LCDB. However, the dataset can be used generally to obtain more current landcover statistics than the LCDB for the Lake Taupo catchment.
The dataset was created by fusing the existing LCDB (created in 1996/1997) with an automated classification of Landsat 7 satellite imagery. Large discrepancies or apparent errors in the original LCDB have been corrected but small boundary changes or misclassifications between forest and scrub have not. Where there was confusion in classifying and labelling the Landsat data, the LCDB classification was assumed correct. The “version” field in the attribute table indicates whether the data is from the Landsat or LCDB classifications.
The data is useful in any applications in the Lake Taupo catchment where there is a need for more current landcover than the 1996 LCDB. |
