Abstract: Island shorelines, mainland shoreline and intertidal areas that were prepared to represent the landward boundaries and intertidal area extent within the Waikato Region Hauraki Gulf Marine Spatial Plan area.
Statement: Island shorelines prepared to represent landward boundary of Waikato Region Hauraki Gulf Marine Spatial Plan area. Mainland shoreline prepared to represent landward boundary of Waikato Region Hauraki Gulf Marine Spatial Plan area upper (landward) limit of the coastal marine area. The upper tidal limit mapped for this project is intended to represent a practical representation of the coastline. Intertidal area has been prepared to represent intertidal areal extent within Waikato Region Hauraki Gulf Marine Spatial Plan area and lower limit of the intertidal habitat. The lower tidal limit mapped for this project is intended to represent a practical representation of the intertidal area.

Abstract: Island shorelines prepared to represent landward boundary of Waikato Region Hauraki Gulf Marine Spatial Plan area.
Statement: To verify the existence and location of islands, the draft coastline and intertidal polygon dataset were compared to the LINZ topo 1:50,000 island dataset and the aerial photos (from 2007 and 2012). Thus all islands from the LINZ topo 1:50,000 dataset were classified as either: 1. Existing island, already accounted for 2. Part of existing intertidal zone, i.e. not an island, but accounted for 3. New island, added to existing island dataset 4. New intertidal area, added to existing intertidal dataset 5. Non-existent, i.e. no evidence of island or intertidal area on aerial photo For very small islands (<0.05 ha) it was often hard to judge whether they were intertidal or not, as the aerial photos were taken around low tide, and the LINZ topo 1:50,000 dataset showed some, but only a small minority of, the rocks cropping out of the water. When viewed at the desired resolution of 1:8000, these islands were not prominent on aerial photos. Where it was judged reasonable certain that they were not intertidal these small rocky patches were included as islands, but often upon examination of aerial photos they appeared to be below the water surface. Most often, the LINZ location did not match the location as shown on the aerial photos, and the islands were moved accordingly. Larger (>0.05 ha) LINZ topo 1:50,000 islands were generally locatable on aerial photos, and included, either as intertidal area or islands. Once again, most often, the LINZ location did not match the location as shown on the aerial photos, and the islands were moved accordingly. Refer to WRC Document #2739972 for the supplier metadata.

Abstract: Waikato Region Hauraki Gulf Marine Park Mainland Shoreline.
Statement: Island shorelines prepared to represent landward boundary of Waikato Region Hauraki Gulf Marine Spatial Plan area. The generation of a “fit for purpose” shoreline (upper intertidal limit) for the Waikato portion of the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, adapted from the DoC dataset, and utilising recent aerial photography and Lidar data. Created by using land polygon from DOC data (Vince Kerr's HGMP MPA Habitats v6 Nov 2011) & modified using WRAPS 2006/8/12 aerial photos. (WRAPS 2002/6, Waikato Region estuary photography 2005/6 and TCDC 2007 high resolution urban photos then TCDC 2010, WRAPS 2008 and WRAPS 2012). Refer to WRC Doc #2739972 for the supplier metadata.
Other Information: The high tide mark represents the upper boundary of the MSP area and is therefore an important administrative boundary. These areas can bewere digitised by the authors from the best available aerial photography. Islands have then been mapped separately. We have also included artificial features that didn’t exist at the time of the DoC mapping, such as the Whangamata marina and the canals in the Pauanui and Whitianga Waterways. There are also islands within the upper estuaries (e.g. upper Otahu estuary) that have been defined as “land” in the DoC mapping. This classification appears to have been assigned on the basis that the estuarine vegetation maps do not classify the areas as estuarine vegetation (no habitat description is given). It is very difficult to be certain about the elevation of these areas from the available aerial photography. Where there is insufficient evidence to discount the classification given by the DoC maps, we have simplified the outline of these features and recorded them as natural islands within the island dataset. Chenier ridges and other complex geomorphic features in the Firth of Thames complicate the mapping of the upper tidal limit. Many of these features are elevated above the high tide level, but separated from the “mainland” by extensive areas of intertidal mud. Chenier ridges gradually migrate inland until they weld with the shoreline. Currently the authors have defined the shoreline using the land-most high tide boundary and therefore the chenier ridges are included in the intertidal area. Where large subaerial spits exist that have a clear attachment to the land (see Figure 5), these features have been mapped as “land”. Chenier ridges that are not clearly attached to the land have been mapped as “islands” within the intertidal area using aerial photography and Lidar data.
