| Abstract: |
This dataset consists of textured landcover images (and related vector features) for the Waikato, North Island and New Zealand. |

| Statement: |
The textured Landcover images were created by Waikato Regional Council as a one-off project. The images were derived using the Landcare 25m DEM (for relief), and the MfE LCDB2 (landcover shading).
This is high quality data. The image is accurate as per the input data. Current as at published date, November 2005. Attribute accuracy is good.
This image can be used as a backdrop for a number of map applications. It is suggested that it not be used at a scale any larger than 1:75,000 as beyond that it pixels become more obvious.
Positional accuracy relies on input data (25m DEM and LCDB2).

| Statement: |
The following are process notes from Dan Borman (Spatial Analyst with the GIS Modelling, Data Integration & Analysis team):
1. Create a landcover grid with cell size 25m to match the 25m North Island DEM. Landcover is derived using LCDB II, attribute LCDBI_NAME_ORIGINAL. I used this attribute because it meant that I only needed to define 16 landcover colours as opposed to loads if I used LCDBII_NAME.
2. Use Spatial Analysts CON function to create a grid of random heights (within a specific range) conditionally according to the landcover at each cell location.
3. Add the resulting height grid to the 25m dem using raster calculator functionality.
4. Create a hill shade of the resulting grid.
5. Overlay the coloured landcover vector data with 40% transparency.
6. Select out LCDBII urban areas.
7. Clip CRS_ROADS to the urban areas and buffer by 40m
8. Add the buffers to the map window and colour light grey.
9. Export the map to a geotiff at 2200 dpi. This gives a cell size of approximately 24m.
10. Use Spatial Analyst to resample the grid to 20m. This was done to soften the image and allow it to be used at larger scales.
In addition the ISRU tools (Many/Raw File Converter) was used to add tiling and overviews to the image. |

Data Acquisition Method(s):
