Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: A data set of the infaunal macrobenthic communities of intertidal estuarine sand-flats in the Waikato Region. A large part of this data set is the result of the monitoring of estuaries for state of the environment reporting (i.e. Regional Estuary Monitoring Programme). Currently this data set includes information from two estuaries in the Waikato Region: southern Firth of Thames and Whaingaroa (Raglan).
Statement: Five mid-intertidal sand/mud-flat sites in the southern Firth of Thames and five mid-intertidal sand/mud-flat sites in Whaingaroa (Raglan) have been sampled for a suite of 26 indicator macrobenthic infauna species. Two of the sites in each estuary are sampled at quarterly intervals (January, April, August and October) and the three other sites are sampled at 6-monthly intervals (April and October). Data can be used for monitoring the abundance of key benthic macrofauna found in estuarine intertidal sandflats will provide the empirical basis for assessing the state of the Region’s estuaries, and to signal any local-scale (e.g., stock trampling, point-source pollution) or broad-scale pressures (e.g., changes in land-use and catchment management practices). The database is regularly updated and maintained as information is gathered through the monitoring programme.

Other Information: The macrobenthic communities are currently monitored in two estuaries. These estuaries are: Whaingaroa (Raglan) Harbour. Southern Firth of Thames. Monitoring is undertaken at 3-monthly intervals in January, April, July and October at Miranda and Kuranui Bay in the southern Firth of Thames and at Whatitirinui Island and Okete Bay in Whaingaroa Harbour. The other sites in each estuary are monitored at 6-monthly intervals in April and October. Note that the frequency of sampling different sites may change over the duration of the monitoring programme (e.g., one site might be monitored at quarterly intervals for 5 years, and thereafter at 6-monthly intervals). Field sampling was initiated in April 2001 and is ongoing. There is also some historic information on coastal biology that was collected by Waikato Regional Council. This includes: A re-survey of the intertidal ecology of Tairua Harbour undertaken in 1994 by Waikato Regional Council 10 years after a study undertaken by Bridgewater and Foster (1984). This information is stored in: photogenix G:\envres\COASTAL\TAIRUA. There is a report available: Tairua Harbour Intertidal Benthic Ecology 1994 (Environment Waikato Internal Report 1996/19) by Stephen White (library copy: 333.955 WHI). Information from surveys of marine macrobiota (flora and fauna) in 1996 at 5 rocky shore sites (Port Waikato, Raglan, Kuatuna, Waikawau, Coromandel) and 10 soft shore sites (Waiuna Bay, Kaiaua, Raglan, Oputere, Whangamata, Port Waikato, Kawhia, Awakino, Whangapoua, Whitianga) throughout the Waikato Region. This information is stored in: photogenix G:\envres\COASTAL\ROCKY_SH and photogenix G:\envres\COASTAL\SOFT_SH. Monitoring began at all five sites in the southern Firth of Thames and at four of the sites in Whaingaroa Harbour in April 2001. Monitoring began at the fifth site (Ponganui Creek) in Whaingaroa Harbour in October 2001. Sampling is ongoing.
