Abstract: Polygons representing the location of registered Waahi Tapu areas listed with Heritage New Zealand.
Statement: Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga maintains the New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero (‘the List’). All entries on the Register (established under section 22 of the Historic Places Act 1993) immediately prior to the commencement of the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014 are deemed to be entries on the List. The Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014 defines a wahi tapu as: A place sacred to Maori in the traditional, spiritual, religious, ritual, or mythological sense. This definition is more restrictive than the way the term is used by many Maori and other organisations. Examples of wahi tapu may include: • burial places • rua koiwi - places where skeletal remains are kept (such as rock overhangs, caves, etc) • places where baptismal rites were performed • burial places of placenta • battlegrounds where blood was spent • sources of water for death rites • maunga korero
Other Information: Digitised in house by a Data Management Officer. Heritage New Zealand (formally New Zealand Historic Places Trust), supplied a disk of proposal and registered documents. The proposal documents held maps that could be registered in our Geomedia GIS. Polygons were drawn with varying degrees of accuracy depending on the quality of the map. The majority were extent maps that held parcel line work and can be considered accurate to a high degree. Others were very old and/or hand drawn and will be more of an indication of where the Waahi Tapu lies within. Please refer to the “Comments” attribute for further information Attribute accuracy is very good.
