Waikato and Waipa River Cross Section Surveys

File ID: 57714B80-9FD7-4DD1-9D84-17EB66679FD3
Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: Data from cross sectional surveys of the Waikato River. This is used to monitor natural and induced changes in the riverbed and to model future changes in the level of surface water at low flow and flood conditions.
Statement: Cross sections of the Waikato riverbed, surveyed to benchmarks. There have been approximately 250 cross sections done along the Waikato River between Karapiro and Port Waikato, and 120 on the Waipa River. Annual surveys from areas with sand mining operations are included. The geographic extent of the data includes: the Waikato River - Karapiro to Port Waikato, the Waipa River - Ngaruawahia to Otewa. The majority of Benchmarks have co-ordinates. The positional accuracy of the data is variable. Whole River has been surveyed approximately once every ten years since the 1950s. Waikato River was last surveyed in 2006-7 from Port Waikato to Ngaruawahia and in 2007 from Ngaruawahia to Karapiro dam. The Waipa River has a shorter time frame of surveys but it was not until 1994 a significant amount of cross-sections where included for the purposes of modeling. This occurred between Ngaruawahia and Whatawhata. The 2007 survey also included a larger set of cross-sections from Whatawhata to Otorohanga. Waikato River surveys were also done in 1913, 1933, 1937 and other localised reaches during the 1950’s. Localised stretches where sand dredges operate have been surveyed annually, although this was suspended during the middle 1990’s. Echo sounding is calibrated using a bar test. There were no checks on how accurately data was digitised between 1979 and 1988, significant errors have been found in some data. Since 1988 there have been manual checks on the accuracy of digitising. Future surveys on the Waikato River will be contracted out with specific accuracy guidelines. Many surveys have been done of individual stretches of the river that provide little information about the river as a whole (e.g. river works and sand abstraction). Some digital data has been lost and needs to be restored using the raw data. There are approximately 300 set sites that are used in the river surveys. Techniques used: standard level and staff surveys, echo sounding. Up to 1979 echo sounding charts were scaled, since 1979 data has been digitised into digital form. From 1998, the current and future surveys on the Waikato River will be done by specialist hydrographic equipment linked to GPS equipment. Used for the monitoring riverbed changes, model future changes in the river bed and surface levels and control sand mining consents. Compliance with Asset Management Plan. Survey information holding the raw data, Waikato River water level surveys, benchmark data set, some finder diagrams to physically locate benchmarks on the ground. Cross section surveys are closely linked with river level surveys. Site photographs are intended. Data Form: Survey level books, echo sounding rolls, ASCII files, location maps (1:5000), Digital Format: ASCII files, CROSS-SECT, VAX environment, selected data is also stored in EXCEL and MIKEII, Microstation CAD, Asset Management Information Systems (AMS)(late 1998).
