Abstract: Oblique aerial photo points for the Waikato Region taken from the port camera. Included in layer file - AERIAL_OBLIQUE_CAMERA_PTS_2016_2018
Statement: Oblique photographs were taken from a port camera. Two survey sets were supplied. The first from the West coast of the Waikato region, including parts of central Waikato District, the second survey includes Hunua Ranges, Hauraki, and the Thames Coromandel District. Using ArcGIS a user can identify the photos using the point feature dataset first to identify their location. Clicking on the folder path within this dataset will enable the photo to be identified on screen.
Other Information: The photo points are generated from aerial oblique photos taken for Kauri Die Back from BioSpatial Limited. The photo points dataset eg GIS_ALL.KAURI_OB_* represent the points where photos were taken from port, starboard, and undercarriage cameras used for the aerial photo capture. Each photo captures the latitude and longitude coordinates through an internal GPS in the camera, this coordinate is then processed to create a point feature with a folder path to the photo itself using ArcGIS software.

Statement: Source: Biospatial Limited. Kauri validated location sites identified by using oblique aerial imagery for the purposes to identify Kauri dieback. Validated locations identified by the contractor, Biospatial Limited. Updated on the 31st October 2018 with a new data supply. Use the layer file KAURI_VALIDATED_LAYERS.lyr to display both KAURI_VALIDATED_STAND and KAURI_VALIDATED_LOCATION_SITE in ArcGIS at the same time. Kauri validated location sites identified by using oblique aerial imagery for the purposes to identify Kauri dieback, supplied to WRC by BioSpatial Limited on 1st of August 2018. Biospatial was engaged by the Waikato Regional Council to undertake comprehensive aerial surveillance for the purposes of assisting with delimiting the extent of the disease in the Northern Waikato region Kauri identification and kauri canopy health data were derived from aerial surveys, and analysis and interpretation of oblique aerial photography. The data requires ground truthing to confirm and is subject to revision post ground surveillance. Updated with more Kauri points on the 31st October 2018 from BioSpatial Ltd.
Other Information: Refer to contracts that apply to this work 4063876 and 9578737 Report Reference https://discover.wairc.govt.nz/otcs/llisapi.dll/overview/10487067 Kauri trees (Agathis australis) are a New Zealand native species distributed north from 38°S (a virtual line Kawhia–Tauranga north). Their status as an iconic New Zealand “taonga” tree is well accepted. Kauri are affected by the pathogen Phytophthora agathicida (PA), commonly known as kauri dieback. This disease is incurable and fatal. Symptoms of the disease include poor canopy health and trunk bleeding. The science of the disease is not extensively described, and there is a level of guess work associated with identifying dieback in trees. Confirmation of the disease can be obtained via soil sample.

Abstract: Kauri point capture was carried out at Waikato Regional Council by ecological contractors, student work, and by WRC between 2018-2024. Since 2021 this data has been sporadically updated as required. This data is merged with Biospatial Limited data to create this WRC corporate data layer BIOSECURITY.sdeadmin.KAURI_VALIDATED_SITE. This dataset is a snapshot as at 12 Feb 2024.
Statement: Kauri point capture was carried out at Waikato Regional Council by ecological contractors, student work, and by WRC between 2018-2023. Kauri location sites (point data layer) were identified by using oblique aerial imagery and WRAPS 2017 aerial imagery. Since 2021 this data has been sporadically updated as required. This data is merged with Biospatial Limited data to create this WRC corporate data layer BIOSECURITY.sdeadmin.KAURI_VALIDATED_SITE. The layer file in GIS_ALL also includes Biospatial Limited Kauri points which were supplied to WRC. This data is updated as WRC corporate data and labelled BIOSECURITY.sdeadmin.KAURI_VALIDATED_SITE. There is a source and age class field within the dataset. The source field notes where the dataset originated. Oblique photographs taken with undercarriage, port and starboard cameras. Two survey sets from the West coast of the Waikato region, including parts of central Waikato District, the second survey includes Hunua Ranges, Hauraki, and the Thames Coromandel District. Kauri validated location sites (point data layer) identified by using oblique aerial imagery supplied by BioSpatial Limited for the purposes to identify Kauri dieback. This work was carried out by Waikato Regional Council from 2018-2024. The majority of the work was carried out over 2018-2020, however this project is ongoing as required. The WRC kauri locations, kauri stands, and old growth data, are stored in an enterprise geodatabase. These sites have not been QA'ed. Work ongoing at WRC in enterprise GDB over 2018-2020 by a number of contractors. GDB named GIS_KAURI_DIEBACK.SDEADMIN.WRC_Kauri_Points_From_2018
Other Information: This dataset is a snapshot as at (**needs updating). It will be updated as required, likely to be every 6 months if there are changes made to the WRC or improvements to the Biospatial datasets. BIOSECURITY.sdeadmin.KAURI_WRC_VALIDATED_LOC_SITE merged with BIOSECURITY.sdeadmin.KAURI_VALIDATED_LOCATION_SITE. Editing included only having two fields for age class and source field. Refer to those datasets of additional fields.

Abstract: Approximately 55,000 oblique photographs taken with undercarriage, port and starboard cameras.
Statement: Aerial surveillance and tree health report West Coast and Inland. Kauri Dieback, Waikato Region. Locations of all Kauri observed during the surveillance flight have been recorded in a layer named KauriTrees. The layer has been supplied as a layer package which includes the symbology used in the surveillance report maps. Kauri have also been assessed with a canopy health rating “Category” of 1 to 5 (see below) and either emergent or mature age/size class. A ‘good’ rating of 1 means that foliage appears vigorous, with full leaf cover; a ‘foliage thinning’ rating of 2 indicates reduced foliar cover, with slight signs of colour change and branches becoming more visible; a ‘some branch dieback’ rating of 3 has an under canopy foliage appearance where branches are noticeably visible or slight signs of colour change towards the yellow spectrum; 4 indicates a colour change towards the yellow spectrum with leafless, dead branches visible; a ‘dead’ rating of 5 indicates tree fatality, with no leaves visible and distinct “spire” like appearance also referred to as stag heads. The age category ‘mature’ denotes larger, adult forms of kauri with dominant overarching (round, spreading, vase) canopies, while ‘emergent’ denotes juvenile rickers (conical/oval canopy form), with some of these in the process of changing appearance to become mature trees. Defining age classes was out of scope for this survey, however, providing this information using the 2 age classes described above required little extra effort.
Other Information: Aircraft operation: Spacing between flight lines was kept at 1300m, with 100m accuracy. The planned altitude of 200m above ground level varied throughout the flights as operators attempted to achieve maximum photographic coverage whilst maintaining their ability to identify kauri. The surveyors found 200m an appropriate altitude for flat terrain; however, further fine-tuning of the correct camera angles and flight altitude was ongoing in hilly terrain. Te Kowhai and Thames airfields were used as bases to refuel the aircraft, to park overnight and to perform pre-flight aircraft checks. Te Kuiti airfield was also utilised for refuelling. • Mapped kauri indicates a visual kauri distribution and relative density rather than being an exact descriptor of kauri tree numbers, because the exact number of trees in dense stands was not ascertained or mapped.
• Ricker Kauri are very similar in appearance to Rimu in the aerial photography, there may be Rimu mapped as Kauri or Kauri that have been excluded as they were thought to be Rimu.
• Kauri planted in ornamental gardens were not identified and are considered out of scope of this project.
• Weather encountered during the survey caused some delays and may have affected photo quality (for a detailed view of weather conditions encountered during surveillance).
In total, over 55,000 photographs were taken from the aircraft in 7 days. The software directing the oblique cameras, the Sony A6300s, stopped operating numerous times and had to be reset to resume 5-second interval shooting. This posed significant challenges to the survey, which required a dedicated camera operator to manage the issue from day 2 onwards. This problem was specific to the newer Sony A6300s rather than the Sony a7r, the software glitch was not detected during testing. Consequently, some areas (gaps) were not captured using oblique photos because the cameras stopped operating. A known stand of Kauri at Bryant Memorial Scenic Reserve (Raglan) was not able to be mapped as a result. The survey was challenged by foggy conditions in the early morning and hazy conditions in the afternoon. However, the overall quality of images was acceptable. Generally, better quality images were captured in the southern area, where less haze was experienced. Flight duration was limited to 2.5–3 hours by survey equipment configuration. Therefore, only two flights were available per day due to later starts each morning (to avoid thick fog). This limited the efficiency of the survey and extended the time required to complete the survey

Abstract: Approximately 45,000 oblique photographs taken with each undercarriage, port and starboard camera.
Statement: Aerial surveillance and tree health report West Coast and Inland. Kauri Dieback, Waikato Region. Locations of all Kauri observed during the surveillance flight have been recorded in a layer named Kauri Trees.
