Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: The Coastal Environment Line is used to identify the extent of the Coastal Environment for the Regional Policy Statement.
Statement: The layer is designed specifically to illustrate the Coastal Environment which extends seaward from the Coastal Environment Line out to 12 nautical miles offshore and includes all offshore islands. The Coromandel and Eastern coastline includes the coast of the Thames Estuary and the coastline of the Coromandel Peninsula and Hauraki Districts. The Western Coastline of the Waikato region runs from just north of the Waikato River mouth to Mokau in the south. This data has been created for the proposed Waikato Regional Policy Statement (November 2010). The Coastal Environment Line is considered to be proposed and is subject to amendment via appeal resolutions to the Proposed Waikato Regional Policy Statement (November 2010). The layer is designed specifically to illustrate the Coastal Environment which extends seaward from the Coastal Environment Line out to 12 nautical miles offshore and includes all offshore islands.

Abstract: Proposed coastal environment boundary line.
Statement: The Coastal Environment extends seaward from the Coastal Environment Line out to 12 nautical miles offshore and includes all offshore islands. The Coastal Environment Line is considered to be proposed and is subject to amendment via appeal resolutions to the Proposed Waikato Regional Policy Statement (November 2010). Coastal Environment Boundary derived by Environment Waikato from Bioclimatic Zones developed for New Zealand (from international conventions) by Meurk (1984) and refined for the Waikato Region by Leathwick et al. (1995) and from Coastal Environment Landscape information from Environment Waikato WRLS/03 study carried out by Mary Buckland, O’Connor Planning Ltd, GHD Ltd and Chow:Hill. The proposed coastal environment boundary line was created for cartographic purposes (e.g. creating the RPS maps). The data quality and attribute accuracy is high.
Other Information: The dataset includes boundary information for the West Coast and East Coast that fall within the Waikato Regional Council legal boundaries or are covered by the RPS maps. The Coromandel and Eastern coastline includes the coast of the Thames Estuary and the coastline of the Coromandel Peninsula and Hauraki Districts. The Western Coastline of the Waikato region runs from just north of the Waikato River mouth to Mokau in the south. Method from the Proposed Waikato Regional Policy Statement (November 2010): 4.1.8 Identifying extent of the coastal environment In relation to the coastal environment: a) the Regional Policy Statement shall map the landward extent of the coastal environment at a property scale; b) until such time as the property level maps are incorporated into the Regional Policy Statement, regional and district plans shall refer to the indicative maps shown in section 4A; and c) regional and district plans shall contain provisions that: i) address adverse effects of activities on the coastal environment, including cross-boundary and cumulative effects; and ii) recognise the particular values and issues present in the coastal environment; and iii) provide for integrated management and consistent provisions to give effect to the policy direction of the Regional Policy Statement for the coastal marine area and the adjoining land in the coastal environment. In relation to the coastal environment: a) the Regional Policy Statement shall map the landward extent of the coastal environment at a property scale; b) until such time as the property level maps are incorporated into the Regional Policy Statement, regional and district plans shall refer to the indicative maps shown in section 4A; and c) regional and district plans shall contain provisions that: i) address adverse effects of activities on the coastal environment, including cross-boundary and cumulative effects; and ii) recognise the particular values and issues present in the coastal environment; and iii) provide for integrated management and consistent provisions to give effect to the policy direction of the Regional Policy Statement for the coastal marine area and the adjoining land in the coastal environment.
