File ID: FE5CD732-FB6A-482E-A2C0-DF099B589A36
Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: Intended to show various features including zones, activities, fauna, flora, and physical features within the Whangamata estuary as at 2006.
Statement: The data set is designed to provide an overview of the activities and features within Whangamata Harbour as at 2006. It can be used for Waikato Regional Council management planning purposes and public consultation to show what is happening in the harbour and to facilitate discussion on these activities and features and possible options for the future. Reports which include the data include: The Draft Whangamata Harbour Plan (EW Docs #1037721), Mangroves Option Report (EWDOCS# 1196590) Mangroves AEE report (EWDOCS# 1196632). Websites that feature the data include: WRC Website: Managing Whangamata’s Mangroves webpage. Reports and map thumbnail and full size popup.

Hierarchy Level: feature Hierarchy Level Name:feature of Whangamata Harbour Features - GIS Layer
Abstract: Intended to show various features including zones, activities, fauna, flora, and physical features within the Whangamata estuary as at 2006.
Statement: The data was captured in April 2006. Most of the features were digitised of WRAPS Aerial Photography dated 2002. Some features such as activities and Iwi data were not visible in the imagery but were known as present as at early 2006. The data may be subject to update in the future should any major errors be identified or should there be any subsequent reviews of the Whangamata Harbour Plan. Data Acquisition Method(s): 1. Consultation with business owner on the requirements and uses of the data set. 2. Draft up an A1 map showing 1995 Whangamata Estuarine data over aerial photography background (13521_A1_Map_White). 3. Peter drew on hard copy of the map features as he wanted captured with labels to identify their attributes. This was done in consultation with DoC and WRC staff during a harbour walk. 4. Digitising features drawn on map against WRAPS 2002 Imagery, inserting attributes using pick lists. 5. Check data captured with business owner. 6. Modifications as required. 7. Final check with business owner. See also EWDOCS # 1066911 Data Quality: The data has not been formally quality assured. It is based on features evident in the WRAPS 2002 aerial imagery, which does have quality assurance applied to it (see EWDOCS 881411), and the local knowledge of the Manager of the Whangamata Harbour Plan process. Boundaries may be subject to minor error in processing and interpretation but are considered reasonably sound as at 2006. The geometry and connectivity have been validated and fixed to a tolerance of one metre. Attribute Accuracy: Attributes are based on interpretation of features evident in the WRAPS 2002 aerial imagery, and the local knowledge of the Manager of the Whangamata Harbour Plan process. There is only a small chance of attribute error due to incorrect interpretation or error in knowledge of the local area. The attributes are considered reasonably sound as at 2006. Completeness: The data set shows 14 types of features throughout Whangamata Harbour. Some of the features mapped are of mixed types as it is often the case that areas are not ‘black or white’ in their flora or fauna type or activity. Even so the classification of some features does not mean those areas are exclusively that type of feature. For example areas mapped as Mangroves may have some small but not obvious areas of Saltmarsh within. Some boundaries are estimated based on local knowledge of the area and the location of those features when compared to other features visible in the WRAPS 2002 aerial imagery. These boundaries could be considered generalisations. 1995 Whangamata Vegetation boundaries were not included in the data set as it was found the positional error of this data set was too great when compared to the WRAPS 2002 aerial imagery. However, the classification in the 1995 Whangamata Vegetation data set was applied to more accurately digitised boundaries where deemed correct by of the Manager of the Whangamata Harbour Plan process. The data set is designed to provide an overview of the activities and features within Whangamata Harbour as at 2006. It should be considered a reasonably accurate indicative data set that could be used to derive some estimates of areas and locations for feature types or for guiding projects, but not for detailed figures that might be used for say engineering or surveying purposes. Logical Consistency: The data has not been formally quality checked against field data. It has been approved by WRC CLAW programme management. The geometry and connectivity has been validated and fixed at one metre tolerance.
Other Information: Attributes are based on interpretation of features evident in the WRAPS 2002 aerial imagery, and the local knowledge of the Manager of the Whangamata Harbour Plan process. There is only a small chance of attribute error due to incorrect interpretation or error in knowledge of the local area. The attributes are considered reasonably sound as at 2006.
