Abstract: River Bank Hazard distances along the Waikato River between Karapiro and Ngaruawahia.
Statement: A Bank Stability Hazard Line is identified with the aim of assisting decision makers in planning future land use. WRC contracted Beca Ltd to develop this data in a one off exercise for the Mid Waikato Bed Degradation Project 2005. For more information refer to report “Proposed Middle Waikato River Bed Degradation Management Strategy” (Beca Infrastructure Ltd: May 2006).

Abstract: River bank hazard lines along the Waikato River between Karapiro and Ngaruawahia.
Statement: Geomorphology type, past instability, bank height, vegetation and river morphology inputs were used to produce Hazard Assessment Scores for the Waikato River between Karapiro and Ngaruawahia. These were then used in conjunction with projected 50-year bed degradation to define “preliminary” Bank Stability Hazard Lines from the toe of the riverbank. WRC contracted Beca Ltd to develop this data in a one off exercise for the Mid Waikato Bed Degradation Project 2005. The Bank Stability Hazard Lines were derived for both banks of the Waikato River from the bottom of the Karapiro Dam to the confluence with the Waipa River in Ngaruawahia. It was agreed between Beca and WRC RCS Technical Team (now ICM) that the cost of undertaking the study at a larger scale was prohibitive - refer to agreement regarding to the scale of data captured for this report. The data was supplied by Beca on a CD (Ref No. 3251420) dated 12/10/06. A single feature class: SetBackDistances, with two attributes (Beca_ID & Rev2SetBack) was supplied in NZTM projection, ESRI Shape file format. The feature has been loaded to by WRC into Oracle Spatial for GIS use. Data accuracy was supplied as agreed between Beca and WRC ICM Technical Team. Beca also supplied two PDF maps showing visual representation of data and some associated data (Chainage points and Steep Bank lines) that were not included in the data supply. WRCs Spatial Analysts have assessed the positional accuracy as follows: Setback placement accuracy estimate (from measurement of river edge) is +/- 15m at best 90% of the time. This could be at least one property in urban areas (900 sq.m property at 30m x 30m). +/- 3m Orthos are +/- 3m at 90% CI, +/- 1m Can usually place a point at +/- 1 pixel, +/- 10m Estimated error where vegetation covers bank/river edge (random sampling of orthos), +/- 1m 'interpretation differences', +/-15m TOTAL at best (measurement of river edge). Precautions taken to maintain the integrity of the data set have not been stated by the data supplier (Beca Infrastructure Ltd.) WRCs Spatial analysts cleaned the topology errors from the supplied data, but this should have no effect of the future use of the data, other than allowing certain spatial function queries to return correct data. Accuracy of attributes is unknown. The data suppliers (Beca Infrastructure Ltd.) are unsure if any topographical checks that have been applied to the data or QA/QC routines carried out to check Validity of Attributes.

Data Use Limits : Beca (& WRC) advise the following: "The Bank Stability Hazard Line is based on the approximate location of the river edge as captured from orthophotography. Distances for Bank Stability Hazard Lines have been derived from information collected during a desk top study and are indicative only. Information is indicative only and should be confirmed with a site inspection. The majority of this dataset was captured at 1:5,000. Some alterations and verification were undertaken at 1:35,000 and should not be used at scales beyond that for which it was prepared. This map has been compiled at a regional scale. It is not suitable as a site investigation database and should not replace any requirement for detailed site-specific geological or geotechnical investigations. This data is not suitable at property level and should not be used on Local Authority Land Information (LIM) reports. LIM level reporting will require property site inspections."
