Waikato Regional Plan Significant Geothermal Feature - GIS Layer

File ID: 1B3E21C7-E887-44CD-864E-B1D88E2B8CD9
Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: The data set shows Significant Geothermal Features in Development and Limited Development Geothermal Systems.
Statement: The Significant Geothermal Features data are used in the Waikato Regional Plan Geothermal Module to show where certain activities are regulated. The 20 m and 100m buffer zones relate to conditions, standards, and terms in Permitted, Controlled, and Restricted Discretionary rules for takes and discharges in Development and Limited Development Geothermal Systems in the Waikato Regional Plan Variation No. 2, Section 7.6, and in the water module. Rules 7.6.6.2 and 7.6.6.3 relating to land use activities in the vicinity of Significant Geothermal Features place restrictions on activities within the 20 m boundary. There are also rules in the water module that restrict takes and discharges within 20 m. Geothermal Features including information such as system name, significant feature, feature type, system type and area in Hectares. Related reports: Wildland Consultants Ltd 2004. Hierarchy Level: feature Hierarchy Level Name:feature of Waikato Regional Plan Significant Geothermal Feature - GIS Layer
Abstract: Geothermal features in the Waikato Region. The layer file in the GIS_ALL folder for this data layer is labelled WRP_SIGNIF_GEOTHERMAL_FEATURE_POLYGON.
Statement: The Significant Geothermal Feature data is a combination of information digitised in-house, and data received from Wildlands Consultants regarding vegetation and other sources regarding geophysical aspects of Significant Geothermal Features. This particular layer represents Significant Geothermal Features as in the Regional Plan Geothermal module. December 2006: Some boundaries have changed; the features are based on Wildlands 2004 work that was reflected in the Decisions version and the recent fieldwork undertaken by Wildlands in late 2006. Changes were made ONLY where boundaries could be reduced in specific area, to satisfy Environment Court requirement that only areas notified publicly be shown. April 2011: Some boundaries have been changed, and maps for Tokaanu and Atiamuri added. Hydrothermal eruption craters on the Horohoro map have been added. Some warm streams have been added.
Other Information: * Dataset shows the geothermal sites within the Waikato region, mainly in Rotorua and Taupo District. Contact Katherine Luketine, Geothermal scientist WRC for more information on this dataset. * The Significant Geothermal Feature dataset has been modified from previous work undertaken by Wildlands Consultants and areas digitised in-house. As geothermal features are dynamic areas, the layer has been adjusted several times over the last few years. In December 2006 it was amended to align with rulings from the Environment Court regarding WRP Variation 2. In April 2011 further amendment was made as a result of WRP Variation 7. Change will be an ongoing process with variations every 2 -3 years expected. * The Significant Geothermal Feature data is a combination of information digitised in-house, and data received from Wildlands Consultants regarding vegetation and other sources regarding geophysical aspects of Significant Geothermal Features. April 2011: Some boundaries have been changed, and maps for Tokaanu and Atiamuri added. Hydrothermal eruption craters on the Horohoro map have been added. Some warm streams have been added. * Significant Geothermal Feature Boundaries: Suitable for scales more than 1:5,000, as information was collected and checked using WRAPS aerial photography. * No quantitative checks on attribute accuracy were undertaken. Attribute accuracy was checked by examination of the draft maps by RIG and Policy Staff and Public consultation. Any identified errors were checked and fixed if necessary. Attributes entered as listed in the Regional Plan. * Significant Geothermal Feature Boundaries: Dataset is complete and incorporates the boundary changes in Variation 7, made operative 8 December 2010. There will be similar variations every few years to accommodate changes in vegetation extent and in our knowledge about geothermal features. * GIS tools used to clean the data include validate geometry, fix geometry, validate connectivity and fix connectivity. Attributes correct at the time the Regional Plan was written. * Significant Geothermal Feature Boundaries: Determining boundaries of Significant Geothermal Features so that activities surrounding these sites comply with objectives, policies, and rules in WRP or for assessment of consent applications. Used in consent officers’ reports, plan effectiveness monitoring, reporting state of the environment information, and prioritising non-regulatory initiatives by Waikato Regional Council. However there are often other matters to be taken into account so before making decisions based on this data check with Waikato Regional Council Policy Group. * Significant Geothermal Feature Boundaries: This Layer represents boundaries of features in the operative Waikato Regional Plan as at 8 December 2010. The layer will be updated from time to time by either order of the Environment Court or changes to Regional Plan but this will require a legal process to be followed before the change is made. Therefore before making decisions based on it check with Waikato Regional Council Policy Group or Katherine Luketina. * Data form is Electronic, from which hard copy maps for the WRP have been/can be produced. Stored as dataset in Waikato Regional Council’s Oracle data base and is accessible by Waikato Regional Council’s Intergraph GIS Applications.
