Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: The coastal shoreline and intertidal area dataset is a practical representation of the landward boundary of and intertidal area extent within the Waikato Region.
Statement: The shorelines were prepared to represent the landward boundary of Waikato Region. The upper tidal limit mapped is intended to represent a practical representation of the coastline. The Intertidal area has been prepared to represent intertidal area extent within the Waikato region and the lower limit of the intertidal habitat. The lower tidal limit mapped is intended to represent a practical representation of the intertidal area. The data was created using information from Waikato Regional Council (WRC) aerial photography and lidar datasets. The dataset features are suitable for viewing over aerial orthophotography at stated scales.

Abstract: The intertidal area is a practical representation of the intertidal areal extent (mainland) within the West Coast of the Waikato Region. It was created using information from Waikato Regional Council (WRC) datasets and recent (2002 to 2012) aerial photography and lidar data. Due to a number of factors the mapped intertidal area is likely to be an underestimate of the actual area.
Statement: The intertidal area is a practical representation of the intertidal areal extent (mainland) within the west coast of the Waikato Region and is suitable for viewing at a scale of 1:5,000 over WRAPS 2012 (Waikato Regional Aerial Photography Service 2012) aerial photography. The intertidal area was created using information from Waikato Regional Council (WRC) datasets and recent (2002 to 2012) aerial photography and lidar data. The high tide/shoreline boundary was digitized at a scale of at least 1:3,000 using WRAPS 2012 photography and recent estuarine vegetation data (2012). The high tide boundary was snapped to the landward edge of the estuarine vegetation polygons where there was no obvious non-vegetated intertidal area landward of the estuarine vegetation. The lower limit of the intertidal area was digitised at a scale of 1:3,000 or greater from aerial photography. Mapping primarily utilised 2012 WRAPS photography, cross checked against photography from 2003, 2006 and 2007 and WRC lidar data where available. The area digitised is likely to represent a tidal level above a true low water spring tide level due to photos not being taken at the exact time of spring low tide. The full width of the intertidal zone is therefore likely to be underestimated. There will also always be inaccuracies associated with defining the lower tidal limit near estuary channels as these are naturally dynamic features. Many intertidal “islands” and sand flats are highly dynamic, particularly near estuary entrances. Where there was a significant difference in the size and shape of the intertidal area over time, the most recent data was used (i.e. WRAPS 2012 photography).
Other Information: Geographic extent is the Waikato Region. Positional accuracy is variable - between an approximate horizontal accuracy of +/- 3 m to approximately +/-10 m at best for data captured from aerial orthophotos and likely to be less accurate for data captured from other sources. Data quality is variable. This dataset will be appended to and updated as further historical data or aerial photography is sourced. Abstract: The shoreline is a representation of the landward boundary of the coast of the Waikato Region. It was created using information from Waikato Regional Council 2012 and 2017 aerial imagery. This dataset may be updated as the final WRAPS 2017 aerial imagery becomes available.
Statement: The data layer was created using the HGMSP SHORELINE, HGMSP ISLANDS, and COASTAL SHORELINE WEST 2012 data layers using 2012 WRAPS aerial imagery with additional data added by Hannah Jones (Coastal Scientist Waikato Regional Council) to complete the Waikato Region. Information from available Waikato Regional Council (WRC) aerial photography at the time (2017) and lidar datasets were used to improve the data layer. The dataset features are suitable for viewing over aerial orthophotography at stated scales. This dataset may be updated as the full 2017 WRAPS aerial imagery becomes available to improve the shoreline boundary.

Statement: The shoreline is a practical representation of the landward boundary of the West Coast of the Waikato Region. It was created using information from Waikato Regional Council (WRC) datasets and recent (2012) aerial photography, lidar and estuarine vegetation data. The "fit for purpose" shoreline was prepared to represent the landward boundary of Waikato Region and the limit of the coastal marine area. The high tide/shoreline boundary was digitized at a scale of between 1:3,000 and 1:5,000 using WRAPS 2012 photography, recent estuarine vegetation data (2012)and WRC lidar data in some areas.
