Hierarchy Level: feature Hierarchy Level Name:Feature of Draft Regional Coastal Plan
Abstract: Desk top of historic heritage sites in the CMA. This data is in AGOL only and should not be used for any other purpose.
Statement: Desk top study to prepare a draft appendix of historic heritage sites in the CMA. Data acquired from New Zealand Archaeological Association’s database ArchSite, Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga’s ‘The List', Shipwreck database (pre 1950) and Aviation accidents pre-1950 where an offshore wreck is known to have occurred. The study area was defined as the MHWS to 12 miles out to sea. To determine the (approximate) extent of the CMA two GIS layers were used: • The coastal boundary was determined by the NZ Coastlines and Islands Polygon (Topo 1:50K) obtained from the Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) online data service. • The Waikato region, including territorial waters, was determined by Regional Council 2018 (generalised) obtained from Statistic New Zealand online data service. • Both layers were downloaded on the 15th of November 2018. The data for archaeological sites was obtained from Archsite, the New Zealand Archaeological Association’s (NZAA) site recording scheme. Archsite contains the location and information for all recorded archaeological sites. This was downloaded on the 15th of November 2018, any sites added after this date are not included. The recorded location of archaeological sites is generally provided as a point, and these can have up to a 100m margin of error. As such, older sites are recorded with a 100m site accuracy grid. Some sites are also recorded with an area demonstrating the extent of the site. NZAA Data Methodology: • All recorded sites were filtered by location. • Sites (or a site’s area or accuracy grid) that fell within the CMA were selected. o Additionally, due to any positional errors in the data an additional buffer of 100m inland was also used to ensure all potential coastal sites were included. o The downloadable version of the data does not include ‘pending’ sites (sites which are waiting approval from the NZAA Filekeeper). These were manually entered when they fell within the scope of works. • The resulting data was 712 sites in the CMA and an additional 968 sites within the 100m inland buffer. • The sites were further filtered by determining which were actually present in the CMA, and of those which would warrant inclusion in the Heritage Appendix. Due to the high frequency of sites this was done in multiple stages. o Sites recorded as having site features solely related to midden, ovens, single terraces and artefact findspots were excluded. While these are recorded archaeological sites and are protected by the Heritage NZ Pouhere Taonga ACT 2014, they are so numerous that they would make the draft appendix exceptionally long. It must be noted however that such sites can be indicative of a wider landscape. o The Site Record Forms for the remaining sites were manually reviewed to determine location. If the site was deemed to not be in the CMA it was excluded. However for burial sites, if the site was recorded as destroyed or excavated these were still included as there remains the potential additional material be present subsurface. The excavation and removal of one burial does not preclude the existence of another. Burial sites recorded eroding onto the coast have also been included as this identified the risk of finding human remains in this area. • The filtered spreadsheet provides a list of NZAA recorded archaeological sites which are definitely, or likely to be, partly or completely within the CMA (MHWS- out 12 miles). The list excludes sites only recorded as midden / artefact as these are currently considered to be too numerous to include. • GIS shapefiles of the Waikato data prior to filtering are provided both of the CMA and of the 100m inland buffer. Shipwrecks (ANSDB): The data for shipwrecks was obtained from the Australian National Shipwreck Database (ANSDB) which can be found online(www.environment.gov.au/heritage/historicshipwrecks/australian-national-shipwreck-database). The location data was downloaded on the 15th of November 2018. Methodology: • 61 shipwrecks are recorded as located within the Waikato Region CMA. Some of these sites were just outside the scope of the Waikato Region, however, these were kept as the accuracy of data is not known. Additionally all shipwrecks were retained irrespective of age as it was considered important to provide all available data at this stage. • 39 of the 61 shipwrecks are mapped in the ANSDB. • 22 were located and manually entered from the description of the wreck location. These are an approximate location, for instance when the shipwreck data noted only an island a point was placed on the island, or a harbour, etc. • Due to issues in the data resulting from vague descriptions or spelling errors not all shipwreck locations are recorded on the GIS layer. • The spreadsheet includes the descriptions of all shipwrecks from the ANSDB (including those not mapped). Methodology: • All recorded List entries were filtered by location. Those that fell within the CMA or within 100m of the coastline were selected. • These were further refined by reviewing the selected items and determining if they were located within the high water mark. Additional Research: Online research into plane wrecks which have occurred in the CMA prior to 1950 was undertaken. No wrecks which are known to be in the CMA have been recorded in the sources viewed. Of note, there is no single source available which covers all plane wrecks, the sources are divided by military and civilian and do not provide an easy way to check for this information. Two additional sites (Raglan Wharf and the shipwreck Sarah Berry) were also recorded. These were not recorded in the above sources but had been identified during the project. These have been mapped separately on a GIS layer. All Data • NZAA Recorded Site (Within Water ALL) - All archaeological sites that have been spatially mapped within the CMA on NZAA’s Archsite. Two additional separate layers providing associated accuracy and area polygons are also included. • NZAA Recorded Site (100m Buffer ALL) - All archaeological sites that have been spatially mapped within 100m inland buffer on NZAA’s Archsite. Two additional separate layers providing associated accuracy and area polygons are also included. • Shipwreck (ANSDB) - Shipwreck locations provided by the ANSDB websiteFiltered & Manually entered Data • HNZ The List- Items from Heritage New Zealand ‘The List’ within the CMA. • NZAA Recorded Site (Final) - All archaeological sites that have been identified within the CMA on NZAA’s Archsite after filtering. Two additional separate layers providing associated accuracy and area polygons are also included. • Shipwreck (Manually Entered) - Shipwreck locations that were manually entered using the location information. • Research Sites – Raglan Wharf and the shipwreck Sarah Berry manually entered sites. Further manual internal processing was undertaken to the data to remove sites that were highly unlikely to be within the coastal marine area.

Abstract: Indicative areas identified for future aquaculture development in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Spatial Plan (Sea Change - Tai Timu Tai Pari). Released December 2016. This data is in AGOL only and should not be used for any other purpose.
Statement: Indicative areas identified as suitable for further development of marine farms in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, as part of the Hauraki Gulf Marine Spatial Plan. Areas identified are likely to be appropriate for the following aquaculture categories; intertidal shellfish (oysters), subtidal shellfish (mussels), or fish and subtidal shellfish (mussels). Two aquaculture exclusion zones are also proposed. The areas identified are a preliminary guide, based on an initial assessment indicating that these locations are likely to be suitable for aquaculture. The boundaries have been carefully drawn to exclude areas where farms would be likely to have negative effects. It is not envisaged that marine farming would occupy all, or even the majority of these areas. To find out more visit the plan's Aquaculture chapter. A site-by-site description of proposed indicative areas is found in the Appendix.
