Hierarchy Level: feature Hierarchy Level Name:feature of Upstream Karapiro Project Boundary - GIS Layer
Abstract: An area feature representing the hydrological* catchment boundary upstream of Karapiro Dam. All land parcels that contained by or intersecting this boundary are deemed to be affected by the Upstream Karapiro Project.
Statement: This dataset aims to be as close as possible to the hydrological catchment upstream of Karapiro Dam and downstream of Taupo Gates. Due to political considerations however the original hydrological catchment has been modified to a) fit the Waikato Regional Council Regional Boundary and b) Fit the Taupo Project boundary at its upstream extent. As such the GIS workflow used to derive this feature is as follows: 1. Using the REC Tracer tool, perform and upstream watershed trace from [REACH_ID] 21103 and 21104. 2. Perform a spatial merge these two features to derive a single new feature class. 3. Insert an extra area feature into the upstream trace feature at its upstream extent and merge to form a single geometry. 4. Perform an attribute query on layer GIS_ALL.CATCHMENTS_HYDRO_NZMS260 to return only the geometry for the Lake Taupo Catchment. 5. Perform a spatial difference between the merged upstream trace feature (3) and the Lake Taupo Catchment (4). 6. Perform a spatial intersect between the feature resulting from (5) and the Regional Boundary layer (GIS_ALL.REGIONAL_BOUNDARY_LAND_CLIPPED). 7. Delete all but the main catchment geometry and check for geometric issues using the topology tools available within the GeoMedia Professional. 8. Add the attributes [ABSTRACT], [AREA_HA] and [PERIMETER_M] and populate.
Other Information: * Geographic Extent: All NIWA REC watershed reaches upstream of Lake Karapiro and downstream of Taupo Gates. * Positional Accuracy: Positional accuracy is inherited from the parent layers. In the case of the REC data, this matches the positional accuracy of the input 20m NZMS260 contour database. Refer also to the positional accuracy for the Political Boundaries layer (EWDOCS# 883529) and Catchments layer (EWDOCS# 1014532). * Data Quality: All spatial processing operations were completed with to location precision of 0.000001 meters. The overall quality of the dataset is however inherited from the source components. Please refer to the data quality notes for the NIWA REC layer (EWDOCS# 935413), the Political Boundaries layer (EWDOCS# 883529) and Catchments layer (EWDOCS# 1014532). * Attribute Accuracy: All attributes are correct and verified. * Completeness: The dataset has been signed off as an accurate representation of the Upstream Karapiro Project boundary. * Logical Consistency: This has been verified using the topology toolset available within GeoMedia Professional.
