Abstract: Inventory of the current distribution and extent of geothermal vegetation.
Statement: This study provides an inventory of the current distribution, extent, and character of geothermal vegetation in the Waikato Region, and includes an assessment of the relative significance of each site based on criteria defined in the Waikato Regional Policy Statement (2016). Sites that are excluded from the report and GIS layer include those with no known or extremely small areas of terrestrial or wetland vegetation, e.g. Butcher’s Pool. This study updates the 2014 geothermal inventory report (Wildland Consultants 2014a), and will enable management of the varied characteristics of the geothermal resource, as required by the Waikato Regional Policy Statement. The first comprehensive inventory and assessment of geothermal sites in the Waikato Region was produced by Wildland Consultants (2000). This inventory was progressively updated in 2003 and 2004, and from additional field surveys and assessment of 2002 aerial photographs that were not available in 2003 (Wildland Consultants 2003, 2004c). Several sites were resurveyed between 2006 and 2007 and their information updated (Wildland Consultants 2006, 2007a, and 2007b). A full update of the Waikato Region geothermal vegetation inventory was undertaken in 2012 based on field survey of 37 sites completed between June 2010 and June 2011, and assessment of 2007 aerial photographs (Wildland Consultants 2012). Field surveys of 25 sites were undertaken in 2014, and the vegetation types updated based on both field observation and assessment of 2012 WRAPS aerial photographs (Wildland Consultants 2014a). In total, 64 geothermal sites were included in the 2014 inventory (Wildland Consultants (2014a). Since 2014 one new site has been identified at Tongariro (Wildland Consultants 2018), and sites within the Wairākei-Tauhara geothermal system, as well as Orakonui and Waipapa Stream were field surveyed and updated by Wildland Consultants (2021b). Some adjacent sites have been amalgamated, making the current number of recognised sites 46. For several sites, the use of photography using Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (drones) has enabled the identification of previously unknown areas of geothermal vegetation, so the overall known area of geothermal vegetation has been increased. The information contained in the GIS and reports can be used in the following areas: Environmental planning, resource consents, Environmental education, State of the Environment monitoring. Provides a regional context for the assessment of significance of geothermal vegetation in terms of section 6(c) of the Resource Management Act 1991. First port of call for information about the composition and condition of individual remnants of geothermal vegetation. Provides a useful tool for analysis and presentation (in map output) of vegetation sites containing specific attributes; trend detection; and State of the Environment reporting. Digital GIS data. The data can be provided as customised, printed GIS map outputs at a range of scales. Hard and soft copy of reports. Hard copies of reports contain colour ½ A4 and A3 maps of each site showing outline on topographic backdrop (from 1:50,000) and vegetation boundaries on colour orthophotographs at various scales 1:5,000 - 1:15,000), and an A3 map of the location of all sites including significance ranking. Supplied with tabulated data with boundaries defined by: administrative region, administrative district, bioclimatic zone (coastal, lowland, submontane, montane, sub-alpine, alpine), and ecological district. Reports, diskettes, photographs. Digital Format: Soft copy reports available as MS Word (maps excluded) DOCS # 617739 for original report, 2000, DOCS # 849702 for Revised Edition, 2003 , DOCS # 2063137 for 2011 report. GIS layer was created using Arc View (v10.1) in shapefile format. Loaded onto Waikato Regional Council Corporate GIS as an MGE Layer. Applications: The information contained in the GIS and reports can be used in the following areas: Environmental Planning, Resource Consents, Environmental Education, State of the Environment Monitoring. Provides a regional context for the assessment of significance of geothermal vegetation and habitats in terms of section 6(c) of the Resource Management Act 1991. First port of call for information about the composition and condition of individual remnants of geothermal vegetation. Provides a useful tool for analysis and presentation (in map output) of vegetation sites containing specific attributes; trend detection; and State of the Environment reporting. Data Set Availability: Wildland Consultants Ltd produced the report under contract to Waikato Regional Council. The information remains the property of Waikato Regional Council, however sensitivity should be exercised where private property rights or identification of landowners may be an issue. 7. Status Information Data Status: The data is a study that has been repeated four times; each time building on existing information and field survey of selected sites. It may be repeated in the future to allow determination of trends but there is currently no commitment to do so. 8. NZ Map Grid Co-ordinates: NZMS260 T16: 440270-U16: 090270 and T19: 440350 – U18: 090350 – 2007 BF35 288 616 and BH37 966 647 - 2011 Boundaries of vegetation mapped onto 1:10,000 2003 colour orthocorrect aerial photographs (black and white 1993 photos for one site, Hipaua) – 2007 Boundaries of vegetation mapped onto 1:5,000 colour orthophotographs (WRAPS 2007) - 2011 The report produced by Wildland Consultants (WRC DOC #2063137) includes other information, including details on: • Extent of each vegetation type • Current conditions and threats • Any notable species (plants and animals) • Level of significance • Management requirements • Tenure • Historical changes • Geophysical assessment (for 19 sites) One-off data collection in 2000, but revised and expanded in 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2014. Existing information taken from various published and unpublished reports. Refer to hard copy document: “Geothermal vegetation of the Waikato Region - An update based on 2007 aerial photographs”, registered in the library, 581.526 WIL. Field work of 36 sites was carried out in 2010 and 2011. Vegetation boundaries were drawn onto air photos (2006-2007). Some boundaries were taken from existing information. Field work for the earlier editions was undertaken in 2000, 2003, and 2007. All sites (to a minimum area of 1 ha), which were not able to be mapped and described from existing information, were field surveyed. Most of the sites surveyed are larger than 1 ha but twelve sites less than 1 ha have been included. Other geothermal sites which have not been surveyed are listed in Appendix 3. Most of these sites are presumed to have no significant geothermal vegetation. Geothermal vegetation types were described for each site, and the extent of each type was mapped onto enlarged photocopies of aerial photographs at a scale of 1:5,000. Site boundaries were further refined in the office by viewing on a computer screen, which has a better resolution than printed aerial photographs. Field assessments addressed the following components: landscape diversity; naturalness, size and shape, surrounding landscape, representativeness, rarity and special features, long term viability, fragility and threat, current condition and management requirements. Refer to hard copy document: “Geothermal vegetation of the Waikato Region - An update based on 2007 aerial photographs”. Waikato Regional Council staff quality assured the data presented as a GIS Layer. The following criteria were satisfied: • All features were closed polygons, inside the regional boundary and approximately in the Taupo/Rotorua areas. • All polygons have entries for every field and no null values were found. • The primary key of the database was unique. • The Co-ordinate system was checked and area database field equal calculated areas. • Thematic shading on the attributes ‘vegcode201’, ‘broad’ and ‘veg_descr’ were checked and verified. • A problem with the original ArcView file was identified but this was corrected on writing to the GeoMedia warehouse. The accuracy of the attribute data has not been verified but could be compared with existing information for sites that have been previously surveyed (references provided in report). The authors made field site visits to verify existing information for many sites (see Appendix 2, “Geothermal vegetation of the Waikato Region - An update based on 2007 aerial photographs”). Complete for Aquatic or non-vegetated geothermal areas, e.g. hot springs are not considered. More detail may be provided for sites where there was good existing information. Almost all sites were field checked and marked onto similar scale maps so most sites have received a similar level of detail in maps. Previous vegetation surveys have been documented in the following reports: Given, D.R. 1989: Botanical Values on Geothermal Sites Taupo Volcanic Zone. Unpublished report, April 1989, Botany Division DSIR, Christchurch. 86 p. Abstract: All areas of geothermal vegetation on the Wairakei-Tauhara geothermal system were resurveyed in the 2020 - 2021 year by Wildland Consultants Ltd for Contact Energy Ltd, and the site sheets and GIS layer made available to WRC.
Statement: Maps were updated as a result of field survey ground-truthing and applied to the WRAPS2017 aerial photography layer. Some previously undiscovered small pockets of geothermal vegetation were found. This report supersedes the geothermal vegetation information and data for the Wairakei-Tauhara geothermal system found in Geothermal Vegetation of the Waikato Region, 2014, by Wildland Consultants Ltd for Waikato Regional Council, WRC Technical Report 2015/07, https://www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/services/publications/tr201507/
