Abstract: Layer of stock unit values for each REC reach in the Waikato Region.
Statement: The GIS_ALL.REC_STOCK_UNIT was created in 2005. An more recent layer has been created - Stock Units 2015, however this data is yet to be made corporate by WRC.

Hierarchy Level: feature Hierarchy Level Name:feature of River Environment Classification (REC) - Stock Unit Layers
Abstract: This table contains stock unit (SU) values for each REC reach in the Waikato Region. This data was derived in 2005, specifically for use in fish modelling projects.
Statement: This dataset also contains predicted stock unit values under two alternative pasture scenarios – one where all current pastoral land less than 15° in slope was set to have a stock unit value of 28/ha if it was currently <28/ha, and another where all current pastoral land less than 15° in slope was set to have a stock unit value of 35/ha. The resulting dataset sums SU/ha to provide a total SU for each REC watershed. The dataset comprises one Oracle table accessible in Geomedia, with current stock unit values and stock unit values for two future scenarios. The following is a summary of how this data was derived, see WRC DOCS# 995827 for detailed description of development process): Stock numbers in the Agribase dataset were given a normalised stock unit value based upon the formula detailed on http://www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/Environment/Environmental-information/Environmental-indicators/Land-and-soil/Land/riv9-technical-information/#Heading4. A total stock unit value for each farm was divided by the area of the farm in pasture to reveal a value for stock unit density (SUD). Farms with reported SUD>35 were removed from the calculations. Average SUD values were calculated for pasture areas < 15° in slope, areas 15° - 25° and areas > 25°. These values were applied to areas of pasture (by slope class) not covered by the Agribase dataset. Each REC catchment was intersected with the pasture/SUD layer to create a layer listing REC REACH_ID, SUD and AREA_HA. The number of stock units was generated by AREA_HA*SUD. Grouping REACH_ID and summing SU produced SU values for each REC reach. This calculated the current situation (attribute SEG_SU_CURRENT). For the future stocking scenarios: Each REC watershed (pasture portion) was split by slope class as above. Current SUD was calculated for each. For the first scenario any area of slope < 15° was set to SUD=28 where current SUD < 28. Actual SU were then recalculated and summed by REC reach (SEG_SU_SCENARIO1). For the second scenario the same process was repeated but the SUD was set to 35 where SUD<35 (SEG_SU_SCENARIO2).
Other Information: This dataset was derived from the Land Cover Database (v1) (see WRC DOC# 881315), the Agribase Database (July 2004) (see WRC DOC# 881291), the Land Resource Inventory (LRI) (see WRC DOC# 881266) and the REC 1 database (see WRC DOC# 935413). The REC_STOCK_UNIT dataset was current as at time of creation - June 2005. It requires update as all of the input datasets (listed) have since been updated. Geographic Extent: This dataset covers the Waikato Region watercourse network as expressed in GIS_ALL.REC_WATERSHED and GIS_ALL.REC_WATERCOURSE. Positional Accuracy: This dataset has no spatial information but when used in conjunction with the GIS_ALL.REC_WATERSHED or GIS_ALL.REC_WATERCOURSE layers it will inherit the positional accuracy of these. Refer to the relevant metadata for further information on these datasets. Data Quality: The data is as accurate as the input data allows. Attribute Accuracy: The data is as accurate as the input data allows. Completeness: The stock unit scenarios are a complete picture for the Waikato Region. Logical Consistency: The attribute column REACH_ID can be joined with the REACH_ID column of either GIS_ALL.REC_WATERCOURSE or GIS_ALL.REC_WATERSHED to display the data graphically in Geomedia.
