Aerial Photography - WRAPS 1993 - GIS Layer

File ID: 404138A1-6673-401A-B96B-E720870E969B
Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: Waikato Regional Aerial Photography Service (WRAPS) 1993 orthophotography.
Statement: 1:5000 NZMG sheet low order orthophotography tiles obtained from the WRAPS photography flown in 1992-1993. Contains 2 image mosaics (in one feature class) covering the Tairua region and 17 image mosaics covering the Taupo region. The data set covers two distinct areas defined as the Tairua region and the Taupo region. No photography was flown over Lake Taupo. The imagery for the lake has been fabricated rather than leave a hole in the image mosaics and as a result the small island within the lake does not exist within the imagery. The complete Regional coverage of aerial photographs is kept in hard copy in Records. These are scanned and registered into the GIS on an 'as needed' basis. The images are designed to provide a backdrop in any spatial viewing system to provide the user with a photographic record of the geographic area at the time when the photography was obtained. These images can be extracted out into reports in other window applications such as Word and Excel and can have other vector and text data overlaid for illustration. The photography also acts as a historical record of the land use. This data set currently (as of June 1999) only comprises the Tairua and Taupo regions out of the complete Waikato regional aerial photography data set. The complete Regional coverage of aerial photographs is kept in hard copy in Records. These are scanned and registered into the GIS on an 'as needed' basis Checks have been done on the image displacement between images and to keep the accuracy to within the specified tolerance. Some image balancing has been done to attempt to keep the tone of the images consistent. Full-scale image balancing was not included in the brief.

Abstract: Aerial images of Tairua and Taupo.
Statement: The photography was flown in stereo at a photo scale of 1:27,500 with each image centre positioned on the mid point of each 1:5,000 NZMG metric sheet. Each image was then corrected for lens distortion; image tilt and a majority of terrain distortion by using a low order photogrammetric orthophoto process to remove most displacement errors with the resulting ortho corrected image being extracted out. Each low order orthophoto covers an area of 2,500m WRC and 3,750m NS. These images were then mosaiced by abutment only (no feather mosaicing) to generate an image mosaic (typically 10*9 images) with seven overviews to provide image viewing performance with Intergraph software. Each image mosaic overlaps the adjacent image mosaic by 3.75km on the northern and southern boundaries and by 5km on the east and west boundaries. The attached layout diagrams below provides the naming convention, extents and layout of the image mosaics. The photography was flown during 1992 and 1993. Please refer to the contact prints for the specific date of any particular image.
Other Information: Contains 2 image mosaics (in one feature class) covering the Tairua region and 17 image mosaics covering the Taupo region. This data set currently (as of June 1999) only comprises the Tairua and Taupo regions out of the complete Waikato regional aerial photography data set. The complete Regional coverage of aerial photographs is kept in hard copy in Records. These are scanned and registered into the GIS on an 'as needed' basis. NZ Map Grid Co-ordinates: The two site areas are bounded by the following coordinate extents: Tairua region: TL 2745000E, 6471250N BL 2770000E, 6426250N Taupo region: TL 2727500E, 6332500N BL 2817500E, 6208750N Positional Accuracy: 90% of points are within +/- 15 metres. The process uses a three dimensional surface model to remove the distortions due to height variations in the photography to within the above accuracy. Without this process the photography in hilly areas could have terrain distortions in excess of 300 metres. This data set is available as photo prints or in electronic format via the Waikato Regional Council GIS. All imagery for this data set is supplied as 8 bit (greyscale) Intergraph Cot image files. The naming convention used is *.dge which stands for a “dodged” COT. Each image has an internal tile size of 128 x 128 pixels and contains 7 internal overviews reducing by half of the pixels in each row and column for each overview. These images are designed to be viewed by any of Intergraph’s main image viewing software packages such as Geomedia, IrasC and Image Viewer. Orthophotos are stored by WRC in S:\Corporate_Data\RASTER_IMAGES\1993_WRAPS Data form of this dataset is avaliable as photo prints or in electronic format via the Waikato Regional Council GIS.
