River Environment Classification (REC) - Fish Passage Barriers

File ID: AF730079-F595-40E1-8842-EDBACDFEBFCE
Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: Each reach of the MFE/NIWA River Environment Classification (REC) network for the Waikato Region was assessed for culverts identified in Waikato Regional Council’s culvert database, dams, waterfalls and floodgates downstream. Reaches were given attributes of 0 (no presence downstream), 1 (presence downstream) or 3 (presence on this reach).
Statement: This information was developed between December 2004 and March 2005 specifically for the Fish Prediction and Fish Index of Biotic Integrity projects (see EWDOCS# 1063390 and EWDOCS# 1063393 respectively). No attempt has been made to update this information since March 2005. As such new or modified structures (dams, culverts and floodgates) since March 2005 will not be accounted for. Processing notes documented during the development of these fish barrier values can be found in EWDOCS# 971944.

Hierarchy Level: feature Hierarchy Level Name:feature of River Environment Classification (REC) - Fish Passage Barriers
Abstract: Barriers to fish in waterways within the Waikato (non spatial - however can be joined to REC.
Statement: Comprehensive processing notes documented during the development of these fish barrier values can be found in EWDOCS# 971944. Initial processing was made in December 2004. Subsequent processing was undertaken to include ~600 new culverts, and to improve the way floodgates were processed (March 2005).
Other Information: Careful consideration was made to ensure that the location of culverts, floodgates, dams and waterfalls were matched to the correct corresponding REC reach. Values 0, 1 and 3 for each REC reach to indicate presence of culverts, floodgates, dams and waterfalls downstream. All REC reaches in the Waikato Region. This dataset is non-spatial. However it is commonly used with the REC dataset. For information on the positional accuracy of the REC dataset see EWDOCS# 935413. This information was collated during the period between December 2004 and March 2005. Whilst the location of REC reaches is unlikely to change, new and modified culverts, dams and floodgates since this time will not be reflected in the data. Comprehensive processing notes documented during the development of these fish barrier values can be found in EWDOCS# 971944. Initial processing was made in December 2004. Subsequent processing was undertaken to include ~600 new culverts, and to improve the way floodgates were processed (March 2005). There is no spatial component to this dataset. Non-spatial quality is good. Careful consideration was made to ensure that the location of culverts, floodgates, dams and waterfalls were matched to the correct corresponding REC reach. This dataset is complete as at March 2005. The values for NZ_REACH in this dataset is consistent with the values for NZ_REACH in the REC datasets (EWDOCS# 935413). A database join can be made between the two datasets to add a spatial component to this dataset. Currently stored within WRC Oracle database as the GIS feature GIS_ALL.REC_FISH_BARRIERS. No attempt has been made to identify specific culvert, dam or flood gate details. This information was developed between December 2004 and March 2005 specifically for the Fish Prediction and Fish Index of Biotic Integrity projects (see EWDOCS# 1063390 and EWDOCS# 1063393 respectively). No attempt has been made to update this information since March 2005. As such new or modified structures (dams, culverts and floodgates) since March 2005 will not be accounted for.
