River Environment Classification (REC) - Fish Probability Predictions

File ID: A48272E1-C907-4ECE-8FBC-BAEB06BCAF02
Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: Probability values for 13 species of fish, for each River Environments Classification (REC) reach in the Waikato Region.
Statement: This dataset is designed for use with the NIWA/MfE River Environments Classification (REC) Dataset. A match can be made between the NZREACH column of this dataset and the NZREACH column of the GIS_ALL.REC_WATERCOURSE dataset. Doing this adds a geometry value to each fish and probability value. Abstract: Probability values for thirteen species of fish (Short-fin eel, Longfin eel, Torrentfish, Giant Kokopu, Koaro, Banded Kokopu, Inanga, Cran’s Bully, Common Bully, Redfin Bully, Rainbow Trout, Common Smelt and Brown Trout) for wadeable stream segments (REC order 1-4) throughout the Waikato Region.
Statement: This dataset is a non-spatial table stored in WRC's Spatial Database available for GIS use. The data is designed for use with the NIWA/MfE River Environments Classification (REC v1). A match can be made between the NZREACH column of this dataset and the NZREACH column of the REC_WATERCOURSE dataset. Doing this adds a geometry value to each fish and probability value. The probability values were supplied in 2006 by Massey University - Institute of Natural Resources under contract to Waikato Regional Council. Data from 1967 individual fish sitings (from the NZ Fish Database), and information from 35 input GIS variables (drawn from the NIWA/MfE River Environments Classification (REC), DOC Fresh Water Environments Classification (FWENZ), LandCover Database (LCDB1) and others such as location of dams, waterfalls, floodgates) were modelled to predict 13 fish species across the Waikato Region. Some of the fish sites were withheld from the model and used to test the accuracy of the predictions. These validation tests showed that the model predictions were extremely accurate for most of the species. The predication model was extended across the entire REC network for order 1-4 stream segments for the Waikato Region. Prediction values are expressed as a decimal between 0 and 1. Predication probability values are taken as correct at time of creation 2006. The prediction variables are currently a one off result.
Other Information: The attribute NZreach is consistent with the attribute NZREACH in the REC datasets. Refer to the metadata of the REC v1 dataset information on the positional accuracy of the RECv1 dataset.
