Urban Areas Population

File ID: FF94D232-48EA-466B-B2D9-FFD23D0CDD84
Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: Identifies the urban and peri-urban areas in the Waikato Region that are estimated to have a combined urban and rural residential population greater than 1,000 as at 2016. Each area provides data on the name, area (in hectares), the Statistics New Zealand census usually resident population count for 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2013, and the Statistics New Zealand annual estimated resident population count 1996-2016.
Statement: There are 27 "Urban Areas" in total. 21 of these urban areas match the polygons for the equivalent Statistics New Zealand Census Urban Areas (UA) data set, with attributes derived and appended by WRC. The Statistics New Zealand UA called "Hamilton Zone" was split into two areas, "Hamilton City" - that being the area of the Hamilton City Territorial Authority as at 2016, and "Hamilton Surrounds" - that being the remainder of the Hamilton Zone that is not Hamilton City which includes the smaller settlements of Ngaruawahia, Te Kowhai, Whatawhata, Ohaupo, Mystery Creek, Tamahere, Matangi, Newstead, Tauwhare, Eureka, Gordonton and Taupiri. Tairua is an official Statistics New Zealand UA but for this data set it was merged with nearby Pauanui to create one urban area called Tairua-Pauanui. Area and population counts for Tairua and Pauanui were summed for this urban area. Annual estimated resident population data also had to be interpolated between 1996 and 2001 and 2001 and 2006 for this urban area. Tuakau is not an official Statistics NZ UA but was included in this data set given the rapid urban and rural-residential population growth in the location. The Tuakau urban area was derived by aggregating Census Area Unit (CAU) or Meshblock (MB) data (pre 2006) from the Pukekohe UA that are only in Waikato Region. Annual estimated resident population data also had to be interpolated between 1996 and 2001 and 2001 and 2006 for this urban area. Pokeno is not an official Statistics NZ UA but was included in this data set given the rapid urban and rural-residential population growth in the location. The Pokeno urban area was derived by using the Pokeno CAU polygon as an urban area boundary. Annual estimated resident population data also had to be interpolated between 1996 and 2001 and 2001 and 2006 for this urban area. Pirongia is not an official Statistics NZ UA but was included in this data set given the rapid urban and rural-residential population growth in the location. The Pirongia urban area was derived by using the Pirongia CAU polygon as an urban area boundary. Annual estimated resident population data also had to be interpolated between 1996 and 2001 and 2001 and 2006 for this urban area.
