Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: An incomplete data set listing and locating benchmarks in the Waikato, Waipa, Piako and Waihou catchments.
Statement: The Waikato benchmark data set includes a card filing system and database established by the Waikato Valley Authority, District Councils, and City Councils. Geographic Extent of the Data: Former Waikato Valley Authority (Lower Waikato) and Hauraki Catchment Board (Piako/Waihou. Refer to cards or spreadsheets for individual co-ordinates. Positional Accuracy: Lower Waikato: Centimeter accuracy for most benchmarks on one or both sides of the Waikato and Waipa Rivers from cross-section surveys. Centimeter accuracy for most of the benchmarks within the flood control scheme, as stopbank monitoring continues. Areas away from the flood control schemes are based from topographical map coordinates. Waihou / Piako: Centimeter accuracy for most of the benchmarks within the flood control scheme, as stopbank monitoring continues. Areas away from the flood control schemes are based from topographical map coordinates. Desktop GIS with aerial photo backdrop, of certain areas, has increased the positional accuracy via the card files. Period and Frequency of Record: The Lower Waikato database was established between 1986 and 1987. Records have been obtained since the early 1960s through to middle 1990s. The majority of the Piako/Waihou benchmarks have been established since the 1979. There are a number prior to this date but have no date origin. The records also include LINZ benchmarks. Data Acquisition Method(s): Information in the database was transferred from card files. Data Quality: Many records are not checked. Many of the Lower Waikato record cards are still in imperial units. Certain geographical areas have been checked and given a physical status. Lower Waikato benchmarks are mainly 3rd order leveling. Piako/Waihou benchmarks are between 1st and 3rd order leveling Completeness: The database is incomplete. Recently established benchmarks are entered into the database. Te Aroha office areas are not included. The Lower Waikato benchmarks have little life history recorded. The Waihou / Piako benchmarks have in most cases a life history. Data Form: Waikato: Digital and/or Hardcopy. Finder diagrams (for Lower Waikato Region, and Lands and Survey benchmarks), a map (plan) locating bench marks in Hamilton City. Waihou / Piako: Digital and Hardcopy. Finder diagrams (for Piako/Waihou Region) a map (plan) at 1:50,000 scale. Digital Format: Microsoft ACCESS, GIS Data Status: Data set is maintained as benchmarks are established and used. A new database including all bench marks and finder diagrams is planned. This data is used by WRC in conjunction with the cross section data set. Please note LINZ maintain the national Geodetic Benchmarks, they can be accessed, queried and downloaded here: http://apps.linz.govt.nz/gdb/
