Abstract: Position of coastal benchmarks on the north and east coast of the Coromandel peninsula from Port Jackson to Whiritoa between 20 June 2000 and 03 November 2000.
Statement: The Coromandel Coastal Survey (CCS) benchmark dataset is derived from the New Zealand Map Grid (NZMG) coordinates from a Global Positioning System (GPS) survey of the xyz position of the coastal benchmarks around the north and east coast of the Coromandel peninsula from Port Jackson to Whiritoa between 20 June 2000 and 03 November 2000. The survey was done by CKL Surveys limited, 310 Tristram Street, P.O.Box 171, HAMILTON. The dataset consists of point data being easting and northing co-ordinates in terms of NZMG (NZGD1949), ellipsoidal heights in terms of New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 (NZGD2000) and a site description. Supporting data: CKL also supplied hard copy easting and northing, height, description and observation date in terms of NZGD2000 and 2 A2 plans of the data. These can be found by referring to Docs#716309 and file no.42 01 06. This dataset is a snapshot in time between 20 June 2000 and 03 November 2000. Waikato Regional Council may update the dataset in the future, depending on future use and design of the Coromandel Coastal Survey network. This dataset is complete, with positional accuracies achieved between known control marks in the range of +/- 5 mm for horizontal position and +/- 10 mm for height.

Abstract: Position of coastal benchmarks on the north and east coast of the Coromandel peninsula from Port Jackson to Whiritoa between 20 June 2000 and 03 November 2000.
Statement: There are 79 CCS benchmarks.
Other Information: Geographic extent within the Thames-Coromandel District being the north and east coast of the Coromandel peninsula from Port Jackson to Whiritoa. Data was collected on eight days between 20 June 2000 and 03 November 2000, with between eight to fourteen benchmarks surveyed each day.The dataset is complete at time of survey. It may be added to in the future, depending on future use and design of the Coromandel Coastal Survey network. Geodetic Datum 2000 was used for the survey, as this is the only common datum covering the area required. This is a dynamic four-dimensional datum, which will update over time. Fast Static GPS (Trimble 4000ssi receivers with compact L1/L2 antennae set on tripods over each benchmark station and a Sokkia automatic level) was used to survey the benchmarks with a minimum 20 minute occupation time at each mark. Four GPS receivers were used simultaneously with at least one receiver occupying and existing Geodetic Datum 2000 Benchmark for the entire time during the survey of each area of coastal benchmarks. Where the coastal benchmarks were under or close to vegetation and buildings, then an additional benchmark was installed to provide a GPS fix of the new mark. This new mark was then levelled manually to the adjacent coastal benchmarks to bring these in terms of Geodetic datum 2000. Observations that contained broken signals or had less than five satellites over the 20 minute occupation time were rejected and that set-up repeated until satisfactory results were achieved. Reasons for broken signals could have been pedestrians passing close to the antennae or birds landing on the antennae obstructing the satellite signal. Each day’s survey area was connected to at least two Geodetic Datum Benchmarks from which the surveys of those benchmarks were based. This provided a check on to existing known points to confirm the accuracy of the marks surveyed in each area. Processing was carried out using Trimble GPSurvey software version 2.35. The NZGD2000 data was supplied as 2D NZMG co-ordinates for use in WRC’s GIS. As there is only an approximate conversion from Geodetic Datum 2000 to NZMG the data was transformed into Geodetic Datum 1949. This was achieved using the known GD1949 co-ordinates of the existing GD2000 benchmarks. The co-ordinates were then converted to NZMG from GD1949 using a known conversion. This was done using Trimmap software version 6.50. Attribute accuracy is checked by owner. The database can be used to; Enable Waikato Regional Council to reinstate a profile if all benchmarks and beach markers were destroyed. Provide hard and softcopy maps of profile locations. The database CANNOT be used to; Compare profile data between beaches. Accuracies achieved between known control marks are in the range of +/- 5 mm for horizontal position and +/- 10 mm for height. These accuracies are based on the published figures for existing Geodetic Datum 2000 Benchmarks. Logical consistency: For checks on importation of data to Waikato Regional Council, refer to Docs#717872. The data can be provided as hard or soft copy customised GIS map outputs at a range of scales. The data can also be supplied as excel or text data. The data was supplied in an excel spreadsheet by CKL as NZMG coordinate pairs with attributes This data was transferred to an MSAccess warehouse using Geomedia Pro.
