This Layer contains information relating to specific volcanic ashfall hazards for the Waikato Region. |
|---|
| Statement: |
The Volcanic Ashfall Hazard GIS Layer contains a range of volcanic features including caldera locations, hydrothermal fields and eruption points, ignimbrite devastation areas, volcanic ashfall thickness’, volcanic deposits, volcanic vents and possible volcanic scenarios.
* The data set covers the entire Waikato Region as defined by the 1996 Statistics New Zealand Local Authority boundaries for the Waikato Region. In addition covers parts of Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay and Manawatu-Wanganui Regions.
* Positional Accuracy:
Low, 80%. Well-known points located within +/- 250 meters of actual location.
* The source maps were drafted in June 1997. The information in this dataset was verified in June 2000. Modification may occur as peer reviewed research becomes available.
* Data Acquisition Method(s):
All relevant information about locations of volcanic centres and vents, examples of ignimbrite and ashfall deposits produced by previous eruptions, and the locations of hydrothermal fields have been digitally captured using IGNS GIS technology. Based on this data, the effects in the Waikato Region of future potential eruptions have been modelled and subdivided into four layers of eruption probability.
* Data Quality:
IGNS performed reviews of captured data before it was handed onto Waikato Regional Council.
* Attribute Accuracy is High.
* Completeness:
This dataset was compiled from the best available source information, but has been generalised by virtue of its scale (1:250,000). Data should not be used at a scale beyond 1:250,000. This dataset is not necessarily a complete record of all volcanic features and hazards in the Waikato Region. In many cases the information supplied in this dataset should only be taken as examples of what ‘truly’ exists. The absence of any particular volcanic feature in an area does not necessary dictate that such a feature does not exist.
* Logical Consistency is High.
* Data was supplied by IGNS to WRC in both published paper maps and digital GIS format files. Data was originally compiled in Arc/Info GIS format and then exported to Intergraph GIS file format before transfer to WRC. For complete notes relating to the integration of this data set into WRC’s corporate GIS database see DOCS #555068. The GIS features are stored in WRC’s corporate Oracle spatial database.
* The information presented in this data set and accompanying report (IGNS Client Report 71618D.10 – WRC Technical Document TR98/07) will have applications in land use and emergency planning. It provides a regional snapshot of ashfall hazards.
* This dataset comprises information gathered and researched by IGNS up to 1997. The accompanying document (IGNS Client Report 71618D.10 - WRC Technical Document TR98/07) was prepared exclusively for and under contract to Waikato Regional Council.
