A data set of Bioclimatic Zones of the Waikato Region. |

| Statement: |
Bioclimatic zones are broad divisions of the landscape based on major climate influencers in NZ (primarily temperature and moisture balance which roughly correspond with altitude) that drive vegetation pattern.
Bioclimatic zones provide a physical (rather than administrative) framework for assessment of biodiversity, in concert with other spatial frameworks that subdivide the landscape, such as Land Environments (LENZ). They have been used to determine representativeness of protected areas network, and to develop planting zones for local planting guides.
They were developed for New Zealand (from international conventions) by Meurk (1984) and refined for the Waikato Region by Leathwick et al. (1995) . The zones for this database are as defined by Leathwick et al. (1995).

| Statement: |
Created June 2005, using 25m DEM supplied by Landcare Research and Regional Boundary data supplied by Statistics New Zealand. Recreated August 2009 using same source datasets. Recreated October 2012 to include a 10km buffer around the 2010 updated Waikato Regional boundary.
Data Acquisition Method(s):
1.Created polyline coastal geometry using the Regional Boundary polygon as a basis. Buffered this feature to a distance of 10 kilometre inland.
2.Derived the height ranges for each of the remaining bioclimatic zones by contouring the grid dataset using the ‘Area between ranges’ method.
ZONE: CRITERIA / RANGE:
Coastal <300 and <1 km from coast
Lowland 0-300 m ASL (excluding coastal zone)
Submontane from 300 - 800 m
Montane from 800 - 1300 m
Subalpine from 1300 - 1800 m
Alpine >1800 m
3.Clipped the Lowland zone polygon using Coastal zone polygon to exclude Coastal zone land.
4.Clipped the Coastal zone polygon using the Submontane zone polygon to exclude land closer than 10 km to the coast but with an altitude greater than 300m above sea level (ASL).
5.Appended the coastal zone dataset and the remaining zone dataset individual bioclimatic zone files into a single feature class and completed checks for geometric errors.
6.Modified attribute table to ZONE, RANGE, AREA_HA, PERIM_M and updated attribute fields accordingly. |
