Abstract: Cambridge land uses created as part of the CLUMP Project.
Statement: CLUMP was a project created as part of the Choosing Regional Futures Project in partnership with Waikato Regional Council, Landcare Research, Waipa District Council, and Research Institute for Knowledge Systems (RIKS) and designed to test the METRONAMICA model. EW DOCS# 1267687. “132.798 – CLUMP – Report”. Refer to the weblinks below: http://www.choosingfutures.co.nz, http://www.landcareresearch.co.nz/, http://www.riks.nl/, http://www.riks.nl/products/Metronamica. Geographic extent to Cambridge and surrounds only, includes Karaprio Village. The study area covers 166km² and the boundary is based on, in order of priority, district, area unit, meshblock and land parcel boundaries and then roads, rivers and ridgelines where these boundaries could not be used. Land use was mapped for two years, 1991 and 2006. Future datasets will not be created unless specifically requested. The data is complete for the entire study area for both 1991 and 2006. The range of the land use classification used was relevant to the CLUMP project only and may not necessarily be comprehensive enough or suitable to use for other areas (for example it does not include coastal wetlands or mangroves). All classification used are to some degree a generalization - such is the nature of land use mapping. A good description of generalizations and issues encountered when mapping and classifying each land use class can be found in appendix I of EW Docs # 1267687. Limitations associated with the source data sets used and their application for the creation of these two land use data sets can be found in tables 3.2 and 3.3 of EW Docs # 1267687. Extreme care and much research went into the initial creation of these two land use data sets using a variety of data sources. Field checking was carried out on the 2006 data set where uncertainty existed as to the land use class. Waipa District planners were also consulted where uncertainty existed and this was unable to be confirmed through field checking. Uncertainties with the 1991 data were checked with Waipa District Council staff where possible. The 1991 data has more limitations than the 2006 data and these have been described in section 3.1.4.4 of EW Docs # 1267687. Both data sets have had their geometry and connectivity validated and fixed to 1m tolerance. Potential applications include: • vegetation type identification and classification • urban land use change monitoring and trend prediction • environmental and species indicators, classifiers and predictors • catchment and riparian assessment, planning and management • biodiversity and ecological analysis and planning • land cover change • resource use monitoring • habitat and pest identification and management • policy development, monitoring and validation • financial and strategic planning, budgeting and justification • risk management • environmental opportunities • mapping, analysis and modelling • assisting contractors Waikato Regional Council users identified included managers, scientists, GIS technical staff, field staff, contractors, policy analysts and planners. Other organisations likely to be interested in the data include Department of Conservation, Ministry for Environment, Waipa District Council, Landcare Research, Ecological Consultants, Pest Control Agencies and environmental consultants.

Abstract: Land use in Cambridge in 1991.
Statement: A detailed description of the methods used to map land use can be found in section 3.1.4 of WRC DOCS# 1267687 and are based on Lillesand’s “convergence of evidence” (Lillesand et al, 2004, p.201). Examples of flow diagrams outlining the process of classification are provided in appendix II of EW DOCS# 1267687. No formal accuracy assessment of the data was carried out, however many areas were informally checked. It is estimated that around 80% 1991 land use data has been correctly delineated and classified. Extreme care and much research went into the initial creation of these two land use data sets using a variety of data sources.
Other Information: Positional accuracy is dependent on the source data used to derive the land use data. Where changes were made, for both rural and urban areas, one of the key data sets was 1992 WRAPS registered imagery so the positional accuracy of this imagery applies to a certain degree. The boundaries were heads-up digitised off the registered imagery at 1:10,000. Given this scale of capture and the positional accuracy of the 1992 WRAPS registered imagery it is safe to say that for all areas the positional accuracy is estimated +/- 50m at the 90% confidence interval. In most instances the positional accuracy of the data will be considerably higher than this although this has not been systematically verified or tested. 1991 and 2006 data sets will be identical where there has been no change in land use. Please see paragraph above under data quality section for an explanation of quality assurance procedures used.

Statement: Description of how to map land use can be found in section 3.1.4 of WRC DOCS# 1267687. Examples of flow diagrams outlining the process of classification are provided in appendix II of EW DOCS# 1267687. Data sets used for the derivation of a 1991 land use data set, in order or importance, include; Zones and Designations from Planning Maps, Aerial Photos – 1m Resolution B/W, DCDB Parcels, NZ Land Use Capability and NZMS 260 Topo maps. No formal accuracy assessment of the data was carried out, however many areas were informally checked. From this it is estimated that 90% of the 2006 land use data has been correctly delineated and classified. Both data sets have had their geometry and connectivity validated and fixed to 1m tolerance.
Other Information: Positional accuracy is dependent on the source data used to derive the land use data. For rural areas one of the key data sets was 2001/2002 WRAPS 1m GSD Orthophotography data so the positional accuracy of this imagery applies to a certain degree (see EWDOCS # 881411). The boundaries were heads-up digitised off the Orthophotography at 1:10,000. Given this scale of capture and the positional accuracy of the 2001/2002 WRAPS Orthophotography it is safe to say that for rural areas the positional accuracy is estimated +/- 30m at the 90% confidence interval. In most instances the positional accuracy of the data will be considerably higher than this although this has not been systematically verified or tested. For urban areas one of the key data sets was 2006 0.125m GSD Orthophotography sourced from Waipa District Council so the positional accuracy of this imagery applies to a certain degree (+/- 0.5m in urban areas, +/- 3m in all other areas). The boundaries were heads-up digitised off the Orthophotography at up to 1:1,000. Given this scale of capture and the positional accuracy of the 2006 Orthophotography it is safe to say that for urban areas the positional accuracy is estimated +/- 10m at the 90% confidence interval. In most instances the positional accuracy of the data will be considerably higher than this although this has not been systematically verified or tested. In this case 2006 data was used as a starting point and changes made to it where other data sets from around 1991 indicated it was necessary. Thus where no changes were made the positional accuracy will be the same as for the 2006 land use data set. 1991 and 2006 data sets will be identical where there has been no change in land use. Please see paragraph above under data quality section for an explanation of quality assurance procedures used.
