Hierarchy Level Name: | feature of Mining Sites - GIS Layer |
Abstract: |
Mining sites within the Waikato Region, including features relating to mining operations. |
Statement: |
* Data includes a number of features related to mining operations including shaft/mine locations, stamper batteries and some tailings dams. Each site is represented by a point on the map, which has some data attached to it, such as site type, site name, site location, data source.
Various data sources were used including Ministry if Economic Development, Crown Minerals data set, GNS (GERM database) and a number of historical maps and documents located in the WRC library. A large amount of the point locations were from mining licences. Note that mining licences are not necessarily where active mining was carried out - sometimes licences were obtained and never exercised, and sometimes mining might have been carried out without licence. Where a site has been captured from a map or plan, that document has been scanned and stored in the WRC Media application, and a hyperlink made to that image from the related site(s).
* Data was compiled over several months beginning December 2008. There were various methods of data acquisition used including (1) Geocoding and loading of attributes from supplied Excel spreadsheet (Crown Minerals data); (2) import of data from shapefile (GNS database); (3) scanning of maps and plans and storing those images in Media; (4) heads-up digitising from various historic maps. Where coordinate conversion was required, in particular from older map references, the LINZ conversion website was used. |
Other Information: |
* Spatial accuracy varies across the dataset but is generally at a standard equivalent to 1:50,000 or coarser. Some of the information, although providing information on mine areas, is not spatially accurate. Some of the maps found, for example in the Coromandel Gold book (Waikato Regional Council Library ref: 622.3422 MOO), are not overly reliable when compared to modern maps, and have been represented as best they can. For less spatially accurate items, multiple features (streams/tracks) supplied on the maps were used and matched to current day topographical maps. This allowed reasonable representation, but some items were not included on the map layer on the basis that they couldn’t be located accurately.
* Another source of information from “Gold mines in state forests of the Coromandel: a historical study” by C.Slane (Waikato Regional Council Library ref: 622.342 SLA) required the conversion of old NZMS1 co-ordinates to the present day co-ordinate system (NZTM). This conversion may have introduced errors to the accuracy of these locations. The layer shouldn’t be assumed to give exact locations of features but more the general area.
* Data Quality: Most data had to be manipulated in some way in order to load it into the Oracle database; in some cases format and structure were poor. Quality of data content is unknown and dependent on the various suppliers (given the historic nature of some of the data it is possible that data quality is poor).
* Completeness is not known. In both the Crown Minerals data and GNS data extended attributes are available and a supplier’s identifier has been retained. Those identifiers, CROWN_MINERALS_KEY and GNS_KEY, can be used (if needed) to join to the extended data set. Note that the GNS data is in a readily usable shapefile format stored under job# 17900 but the Crown Minerals data are stored in spreadsheets which would require further work to access using database methods.
This data was suppied from various sources that includes Crown Minerals, Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS) and WRC in-house documents of various authors.
* The data covers that extent of that Waikato Region and was compiled over several months beginning December 2008 and is current as at April 2009. It is stored in NZTM coordinates.
