The Near Shore Zone (GIS_ALL.TAUPO_VARIATION_NEAR_SHORE_ZNE) was predominantly captured by creating a 200 meter buffer zone around the Lake Taupo CRS parcel (for specifics of parcel description see the Positional Accuracy section above), using Geomedia Professional v5.1. In a number of specific areas the Near Shore Zone was extended beyond 200m meters to also include Lakeshore communities currently serviced by on-site wastewater systems (for detail see the documents listed in the General Notes section).

The Near Shore Zone boundary (GIS_ALL.TAUPO_VARIATION_NEAR_SHORE_ZNE) is predominantly an area of 200 meters surrounding Lake Taupo. Lake Taupo is defined using the land parcel that legally defines Lake Taupo within the Core Record System (CRS) managed by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) [MBLK TAUPO NUI A TIA shown as ML 22226 (South Auckland) and ML 5568 (Wellington)]. For the accuracy of the CRS parcels refer to PCDOCS# 871640. Geomedia Professional v5.1 was used to define the 200 meter buffer zone where appropriate. |

The catchment boundary (GIS_ALL.TAUPO_VARIATION_TAUPO_CATCHMNT) was captured as part of the Oracle feature class GIS_ALL.CATCHMENTS_HYDRO_NZMS260 (see PCDOCS# 1014532). The Taupo catchment boundary is watershed delineation and has no relationship to Waikato Regional Council Regional boundary, or to any property boundaries (except where modified to better reflect a watershed in specific areas). In these specific areas, the boundary has been realigned after field survey using GPS or identification using aerial photography.
This catchment boundary is not an Waikato Regional Council legal boundary. The boundary has been captured from the NZMS260 map sheet series and is accurate to +/- 200 metres at best. (Except for realignment in specific areas). The boundary is very subjective in areas with sinkholes, underground streams or drains. The boundary is not suitable for use in detailed, property-specific analysis.
The spatial accuracy of the boundary could be improved, for example with the use of local knowledge or the use of up-to-date aerial orthophotos. When overlaid with features from other sources, this boundary may appear to be mismatched.
Compiled during the period August 2004 – May 2005 for use with the Waikato Regional Plan Variation 5 – Lake Taupo Catchment.
The GIS_ALL.TAUPO_VARIATION_TAUPO_CATCHMNT layer was updated in March 2013 as a result of a GPS survey of the catchment boundary between Mapara Rd and Poihipi Rd, the Taupo Catchment boundary as it relates to land use rules 3.10.5.* is changing. WRC staff members Jon Palmer and Megan Coup walked the catchment boundary ridgeline with GPS units on the 25 February 2013. They plotted a waypoint on the GPS unit at every corner – whenever the ridgeline changed direction. The catchment updated boundary in the vicinity of where it crosses Whangamata Rd line has been verified by other WRC staff members – not initially involved in the survey. The survey was initiated due to landowners concerns that the original catchment boundary line was incorrect |
