Abstract: |
Bathymetry survey of the Lower Waikato River (delta and estuary area) by Discovery Marine Ltd in June 2013. |
Statement: |
This area was surveyed between 10-28 June 2013 and encompassed all waters with the Port Waikato River entrance, upstream to vicinity of The Elbow landing. All main channels, waterways and
streams were surveyed throughout the delta region. |

Statement: |
Raw survey data was reduced for tide and thinned to 1m spacing by the suppliers. |
Other Information: |
A mixture of weather conditions were experienced throughout the survey period. The downstream region at Port Waikato could only be surveyed in light wind conditions due to issues with surface chop. Within the delta region, boat sounding could be undertaken in most weather conditions being relatively sheltered. Sounding was predominately undertaken over high water periods due to generally shallow depths throughout the lower reaches.
DMLs 5.3m Stabicraft inshore survey vessel was the primary survey vessel used for the survey. The boat is fitted with a full digital survey system with all data logged using Trimble HydroPro acquisition software. A large Jet Ski, converted for surveying operations was also used which improved the speed of data collection. The Jet Ski was fitted with a similar set of survey equipment to the survey boat and could access very shallow areas not suitable for the boat.
A Trimble R6 RTK GPS system was used for vessel positioning with a horizontal accuracy of better than +/-0.1m. On each day of boat sounding, the RTK Base Station was erected over known survey marks, being existing LINZ survey marks or newly established marks by DML.
A Tritech PA500 digital sounder operating on 500 kHz frequency was used on both survey platforms. This is a high frequency narrow beam width sounder with a rated accuracy of +/-1cm. The echo sounders were calibrated prior to the survey.
Soundings were reduced for tide using RTK GPS derived measurements. A tide gauge was also installed at the Port Waikato Wharf as a further check on tide levels. Tidal curves were derived from the RTK measurements and referred to Auckland Vertical Datum (AVD) for the data collection stage, since the measurements are derived from a local survey network in terms of AVD. However, final data has been converted to Moturiki Vertical Datum (MVD) using a known conversion factor promulgated by LINZ. For the survey region, a value of -0.1m has been used to convert from AVD to MVD.
A supplied 2D bathymetry image illustrates the sounding coverage and line direction/spacing. Throughout the main body of water in vicinity of Port Waikato, lines of sounding were generally run perpendicular to seabed contours at between 50-100m line spacing. Within the delta region amongst the islands, sounding line density was increased to 25-50m spacing. In addition to conventional line sets, some channels and streams were surveyed using a zigzag pattern when practical to do so. Every attempt was made to echo sound all waterways, including the smaller streams and tributaries, however there were some minor streams that could not be accessed by either survey vessel due to extremely thick weed.
Raw survey data was reduced for tide and then exported into Terramodel processing software for database checks and management. Surfer8 Terrain modelling software to generate the accompanying 2D Image. A preliminary depth dataset (ASCII XYZ) of cleaned data thinned to 1m spacing has been compiled. If required by the Client, gridding of the data can be undertaken for modelling requirements.
Based on comparison of overlapping soundings, the accuracy of depths for this survey is assessed as +/-0.20m or better.
Noting the limitations with shallow depths and access to weed laden waterways, it is believed that excellent coverage has been achieved throughout the designated survey area.
