Biodiversity Vegetation - Wetland Datasets

File ID: 0607697C-560D-4284-A7B9-FF921B606B6B
Hierarchy Level: dataset
Abstract: These wetland datasets were created to assist in identifying wetlands for the Waikato Region. The datasets wetlands probability and wetlands Waikato region are created using different methods, but both use a similar base datasets, including queried wetlands from biodiversity vegetation 2012.
Statement: For the WETLANDS_PROBABILITY data layer the methodology involved combining six wetland datasets into one layer to identify the potential presence of wetland sites. The data layer was labelled Waikato Wetlands Probability layer. The methodology followed a similar process carried out by the US EPA (refer to References). This method seemed appropriate given it combined a number of wetland indicator layers and could vary the probability score if needed based on a particular data layers design scale and accuracy. A numerical score in this case 1 or 1.5 was given to each layer to indicate potential probability of wetlands occurring at a particular site. A score of 1.5 was given to Biodiversity vegetation (BIOVEG 2012) wetlands which is slightly higher than the rest as it was generally observed that the boundaries may have been more accurate for this wetland layer than for the others, hence a higher score was given. This layer has combined: 1. Biovegetation 2012 - BIOVEG 2012 (Source: Waikato Regional Council) Attributes used included; a. Wetland=Yes, b. Herbaceous freshwater vegetation, c. Herbaceous saline vegetation. 2. FENZ (Wetlands - FENZ_WETLAND_TYPOLOGY. Source: Department of Conservation); 3. Waipa Catchment Wetlands (Catherine & Ross Martin’s work for Waipa/Waikato Catchment Prioritisation, Waikato Regional Council); 4. LCDB v4.1 wetland attributes (Source: Landcare Research); a. Herbaceous freshwater wetland, b. Herbaceous saline wetland, and c. Wet context field= Yes. 5. Topo50 Swamps (Source: LINZ, downloaded September 2015) 6. Landcare Research Palustrine wetland layer (Source: Landcare Research) The WETLANDS WAIKATO REGION data layer identifies freshwater wetlands in the Waikato Region with areas that have been derived using the existing WRC biodiversity vegetation (2012) wetland data, and oblique aerial imagery. The wetlands are attributed with wetland classes using Singers and Rogers (2014) ecosystem classification.

Abstract: This dataset is derived from the WETLANDS_WAIKATO_REGION layer. Wetland polygons have been buffered by 10 metres and all interior boundaries have been dissolved. This layer provides a 10 meter setback distance boundary around known wetlands, as a visual reference for Operations and Management staff.
Statement: The layer was created for display in Ourmaps viewer to aid in site operational planning and management.
Other Information: Acknowledge data input sources - including Landcare Research Limited, LINZ, Waikato Regional Council, and Department of Conservation. For the WETLANDS PROBABILITY data layer it is intended to be mapped by the TOTALSCORE attribute field which is the sum of probability scores for the 6 different input layers. The range of values is from 1 - 5.5. For the WETLANDS WAIKATO REGION data layer it is intended to be mapped by the Wetland_Class attribute field, the wetland classes are described more fully in the DOC technical report which there is a link in the reference attribute field.

Abstract: This dataset was completed to assist in identifying wetlands, either current or historic. The wetlands probability layer combines a number of wetland layers and gives each wetland polygon a probability score based on overlapping wetland layers. The higher the ranking in the TOTAL SCORE field indicates a higher probability of a wetland occurring.
Statement: The wetland probability dataset was completed to assist in identifying wetlands, either current or historic. The wetlands probability layer combines a number of wetland layers and gives each wetland polygon a probability score based on overlapping wetland layers. It is recommended that the TOTAL SCORE field is used as a symbology field to display the data informatively. The higher the ranking indicates a higher probability of a wetland occurring. This dataset was completed to assist in identifying wetlands for various projects including the Biodiversity Inventory, SNA identification, identifying wetlands for the NPS-FW, and to assist in any consent activities involving wetlands. For SNA projects it could be used to assist with answering criteria 6 for Significant Natural Areas (SNA) for the Waikato Regional Council. This dataset can be used for other wetland related projects or queries where applicable. Note the data limitations when using this data layer. The methodology involved combining six wetland datasets into one layer to identify the potential presence of wetland sites. The methodology followed closely, a process carried out by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This method seemed appropriate given it combined a number of wetland indicator layers and could vary the probability score if needed based on a particular data layers design scale and accuracy. A numerical score in this case 1 or 1.5 was given to each layer to indicate potential probability of wetlands occurring at a particular site. A score of 1.5 was given to Biodiversity vegetation (BIODIVERSITY VEGETATION 2012-2017) wetlands and the Biodiversity Inventory wetlands which are slightly higher than the rest as it was generally observed that the boundaries may have been more accurate for this wetland layer than for the others, hence a higher score was given. It is recommended that the TOTAL SCORE field is used as the symbology field to display the information. *Note - Refer to reference methodology document WRC DM#3343592 for the latest updates (October 2022).
Other Information: Acknowledge data input sources - including Landcare Research Limited, LINZ, Waikato Regional Council, and Department of Conservation. Refer to reference methodology document WRC DM#3343592 It is recommended to used the TOTAL SCORE attribute field to display the data. The symbology layer was set up to show no boundary lines deliberately to simplify the polygon geometry of the various data inputs. This layer has combined: 1. Biovegetation 2012 - BIOVEG 2012 - 2017 (Source: Waikato Regional Council) Attributes used included; a. Wetland=Yes, b. Herbaceous freshwater vegetation, c. Herbaceous saline vegetation. 2. While for the Biovegetation 2012 data layer 10% of all sites were field checked by roadside views only, and only a proportion of these sites were wetland sites. It is presumed that the data layer here could be viewed as stage 1 only of a regional wetland layer, with further more detailed ecological field checking to be completed at a later date. It is worth while considering the various spatial extent of the different datasets used in the creation of this dataset when applying its use.

Abstract: This dataset identifies freshwater wetlands in the Waikato Region with areas that have been derived using the existing WRC biodiversity vegetation (2012) wetland data, and oblique aerial imagery. The wetlands are attributed with wetland classes using Singers and Rogers (2014) ecosystem classification. This wetland layer has been derived using desktop analysis only and should be used with that limitation in mind. Further project work is currently underway at Waikato Regional Council to validate the wetland data more accurately.
Statement: This dataset focused on identifying freshwater wetlands in the Waikato Region, with the majority of areas greater than 1ha that had been identified using existing WRC biodiversity vegetation (2012) wetland data. Polygons that included saline environments and mangroves were excluded. The total amount of polygons were 4933, covering 41574 ha in area. However some of the remaining polygons extended into saline environments, resulting in minor amounts of three saline (SA) classes. The wetlands are attributed with wetland classes using Singers and Rogers (2014) ecosystem classification. Polygons were attributed to one of 15 wetland classes. The data layer provides hierarchical categories at the following levels: 1. Wetland type - bog, fen, swamp, marsh (includes ephemeral wetlands), 2. Vegetation structure, e.g. reedland, sedgeland, shrubland, forest, 3. Vegetation composition, including main species such as raupo, manuka, willow, or kahikatea. Refer to the limitations section of this metadata to identify potential improvements for this dataset. For a description of wetlands classes refer to 'A Classification of New Zealand's terrestrial ecosystems' Table A2.2 https://www.doc.govt.nz/globalassets/documents/science-and-technical/sfc325entire.pdf This dataset has not been derived using NPS standards i.e. not down to 0.05ha. Work is ongoing to produce a wetland data layer up to that standard.

Revision if needed, alteration of polygon boundaries, particularly where indicated in attribute database comments. 2. Amalgamation of multiple adjoining polygons that are part of the same large wetland. 3. Continue to search for and add new wetland polygons as knowledge of sites increase. 4. Ground truthing required to confirm wetland types. 5. Consider expanding the database to include smaller wetlands i.e. the Freshwater NPS 2020 applies to wetlands 0.05ha or greater in extent and small wetlands containing threatened species. 6. Analyse the data at different levels within the hierarchy e.g. wetland types, vegetation composition and structure, exotic versus native, and/or size classes. Abstract: The Wetland inventory data layer was developed for Natural terrestrial wetlands as defined by the National Policy Statement - Freshwater (NPS-FW). This layer is provisional only and is currently being validated and checked by wetland ecologists at Waikato Regional Council.
Statement: It should be emphasized that the wetland inventory is generated by desk top methods only and should be used with this limitation in mind. While for the Biovegetation 2017 data layer for example 10% of all sites were field checked by roadside views only, and only a proportion of these sites were wetland sites. It is presumed that the data layer here could be viewed as stage 1 only of a regional wetland layer, with more detailed ecological field checking to be completed at a later date. It is worthwhile considering the spatial extent of the input data layers used when applying this data layer also. Refer to the metadata of the input layers for limitations on the use of those also.
Other Information: The wetland inventory data is currently stored in this enterprise geodatabase (GDB) SDEADMIN.WETLAND_INVENTORY
