Hierarchy Level: feature Hierarchy Level Name:Feature of Peat and Organic Soils
Abstract: The Organic Soil Extent Combined layer is a representation of the extent of peat soils across the Waikato Region, created by combining mapped soils from the following two layers which have a soil order classified as organic: SMAP_SOIL_PROP_BASIC_2022 (where NZSC_Order LIKE '%O%') and the LAND_RESOURCE_INVENTORY_FSL_EW (where NZSC LIKE 'O%').
Statement: For the purpose of creating this layer, peat soils are all soils classified with a soil order of ‘Organic’ as derived from the New Zealand Soil Classification (NZSC). S-Map is a New Zealand digital soil information map developed by Landcare Research, which builds on previous soil mapping by filling in gaps with new mapping and upgrading the information content and associated database to meet a new national standard. S-Map however does not currently cover the whole Waikato region. The Fundamental Soils Layer (FSL) from the New Zealand Land Resource Inventory, is however nationally complete and therefore can be used to fill in any gaps in the S-Map coverage and produce a regional representation of organic soils. As S-Map incorporates the best available spatial information from soil surveys or new mapping, has a wider range of soil properties, and thus has a finer resolution, the SMAP_SOIL_PROP_BASIC_2022 layer has precedence over the LAND_RESOURCE_INVENTORY_FSL_EW layer. Where available, WRC used S-Map to determine the area and location of organic soils in the Waikato region, and the areas where S-Map does not cover the region, WRC used the FSL layer. As S-Map takes precedence, if FSL classifies an area’s soil order as organic, but S-Map does not, these areas will not be included in the Organic Soil Extent Combined layer. Previous versions of this layer also incorporated the Lower Waikato Peat Survey data (North West Huntly and South West Mangatawhiri), however S-Map 2022 now takes precedence over this data.
Other Information: There are two layer files: ORGANIC_SOIL_EXTENT_COMBINED_sib_proportion.lyr has symbology based on the SUM_SIB_PROPORTION_NUMBER attribute and ORGANIC_SOIL_EXTENT_COMBINED_source.lyr has symbology for the SOURCE attribute
