Abstract: |
Waikato Regional Aerial Photography Service (WRAPS) 2006 - Colour digital orthophotography for the Waikato region. |
Statement: |
The WRAPS 2006 dataset contains 235 orthophoto tiles, covering estuaries within the Waikato Region and overlap into inshore coastal waters.. The imagery was captured between 2006 and 2007. The WRAPS 2007 dataset covers the full Waikato Region and Rotorua District Council area.
The estuary aerial photography flying date and delivery date are included as attributes. The Firth of Thames and Coromandel Peninsula Estuaries were captured in 2006 while Port Waikato, Raglan, Kawhia & Aotea Harbours were completed in 2007.
The digital orthophotography is designed to either provide a backdrop or be used for analyses in any spatial viewing system. It provides a photographic record of the geographic area at the time the aerial photography was obtained. It also acts as a ‘moment in time’ record of the land cover and land use. The digital orthophotography can have GIS vector data overlays, be draped over a DTM in 3-D software and can be exported to other windows applications such as Word and PowerPoint.
The digital orthophotography is referenced to the New Zealand Transverse Mercator projection with the NZGD2000 datum. The digital orthophotos are designed to be used at a scale of 1:5000.
The digital orthophotos have 0.391 square metre pixels (0.625m x 0.625m) and a horizontal accuracy of +/- 3.0 metres at 90% confidence. Digital orthophoto tiles are 2400 metres x 3600 metres with 100 tiles per NZTopo50 map sheet.
The digital orthophotography and aerial photography are owned and copyrighted by Terralink International Limited (now CoreLogic) and Waikato Regional Council.
A digital terrain model (DTM) with a planar accuracy of +/- 3.0 metres and a vertical accuracy of +/- 6.0 metres at 90% confidence has also been purchased from Terralink International Limited by Waikato Regional Council.
This WRAPS 2006 estuaries dataset is a snapshot in time between June 2006 and April 2007. It complements the WRAPS 1992, WRAPS 2002 datasets.
Note that some of the WRAPS 2006 tiles are partial tiles (5) or have minor cloud on the edges. These areas have been re-captured and are included in the WRAPS 2007 dataset. |

Abstract: |
Aerial photos tiles of estuarys in the Waikato Region. |
Statement: |
The estuary aerial photography flying date and delivery date are included as attributes. The Firth of Thames and Coromandel Peninsula Estuaries were captured in 2006 while Port Waikato, Raglan, Kawhia & Aotea Harbours were completed in 2007.
Data Acquisition Method(s):
The 24 bit colour aerial photography was flown at 20,000 feet with zero cloud cover and a sun angle of >= 40 degrees. A LH Systems RC 30 camera with 152 mm focal length was used. These specifications produced a contact print scale of 1:40,000. The aerial photographs were scanned at 12.5 µm (0.5 metre resolution) then resampled to 0.625 metre final resolution. Each image was corrected for lens distortion, image tilt and terrain distortion by using a high order photogrammetric orthophoto process. Each digital orthophotograph covers an area of 2,400 m EW and 3,600 m NS. The digital orthophotographs are feather mosaiced to allow the generation of an image mosaic. The digital orthophotographs were supplied to Waikato Regional Council as georeferenced TIFF files.
The raw tiffs were converted to jpeg format by Waikato Regional Council for improved performance in GeoMedia – see section 6. Each digital orthophoto tile has seven internal overviews. The WRAPS digital orthophoto tile naming convention (BD33_0102.tif) is based on the NZTM naming convention, that is nztmsheetnumber_rownumbercolumnnumber.extension. |
Other Information: |
90% of the points are within +/- 3.0 metres of their true position (i.e. horizontal [planar] accuracy of +/- 3.0 metres at 90% confidence) with 0.391 square metre pixels (orthophoto ground sample distance is 0.625 metres).
Projection and Co-ordinates:
New Zealand Transverse Mercator (NZTM) - New Zealand Geodetic Datum 2000 . Mean Sea Level – Moturiki Vertical Datum 1953
Positional Accuracy:
90% of the points are within +/- 3.0 metres of their true position (i.e. horizontal [planar] accuracy of +/- 3.0 metres at 90% confidence) with 0.391 square metre pixels (orthophoto ground sample distance is 0.625 metres).
The WRAPS 2006 digital orthophotography is designed to be used at a scale of 1:5000 in the NZTM projection.
An associated DTM has a planar accuracy of +/- 3.0 metres and a vertical accuracy of +/- 6.0 metres at 90% confidence.
Data Quality:
To be completed when all the orthophotos are received.
Attribute Accuracy:
High.
Completeness:
As at January 2008 the dataset consists of estuary images for most of the region – 235 tiles. The complete WRAPS 2007 dataset contains 3577 digital orthophoto tiles covering the entire Waikato Region and Rotorua District Council.
Data Form:
The Digital orthophotography has been supplied on DVD and is available in both soft and hard copy formats (when printed).
Digital Format:
The digital orthophotography is supplied as 24 bit colour georeferenced TIFF image files. Each image has an internal tile size of 2400 columns x 3600 rows of pixels. The digital orthophotography is also supplied in ECW compressed format (10 times compression).
For GIS use all TIFF images have been processed into optimum format for GeoMedia applications. This consists of TIFF with JPEG compression (approximately 10 times), 7 internal overviews and optimum internal tile size. Intergraph's batch processor, ISRU mr_file.exe, was used in this processing. This approach has been used for all WRC GIS orthophotography layers.

Care should be taken when using this data to obtain co-ordinates, for example from Smart Maps, GeoMedia or any other application. Co-ordinates derived in this way will be subject to the same inherent accuracy as the source data (See Data Quality Information above), therefore the following disclaimer should be attached to any co-ordinates obtained from this dataset.
"These coordinates were obtained from the 2006 Waikato Regional Aerial Photography Service (WRAPS) orthophotos. The orthophotos have a stated horizontal accuracy of +/- 3.0 metres at 90 per cent confidence interval. The horizontal accuracy of coordinates derived from the orthophotos may be less than this due to factors such as capture scale or placement error. These coordinates are therefore indicative only and the use of a registered surveyor is recommended where the risks inherent in this accuracy statement are not acceptable to the user." |
