Abstract: |
A data set of the profiles of coastal beaches resulting from land surveying and (occasional) echo sounding. |
Statement: |
At present, the beach profiles network is primarily being used to determine the cut and fill envelope for eastern Coromandel beaches. Surveys are infrequent and focus on periods of extreme erosion or accretion - though there are a limited number of surveys undertaken each year at selected sites. Focus has also been placed on upgrading the network, establishing appropriate beach markers, checking and archiving historical data (inherited from predecessor bodies), and producing upgraded finder diagrams.
Predominantly this dataset show beaches of the Eastern Coromandel Peninsula, Port Jackson to Whiritoa.
This dataset is to improve understanding of the nature and scale of shoreline movements for various coastal management purposes, including the estimation and monitoring of coastal erosion hazard. The prime purpose of the present limited monitoring programme is to establish the cut and fill envelope for Eastern Coromandel beaches. However, as yet, there is inadequate data for this purpose - as data set lacks measurements taken after severe storms (few of these since July 1978).
The Council is presently involved in work co-ordinated by NIWA aimed at developing quantitative video monitoring techniques. When operational, it is envisaged that this technique, which will provide far more spatially and temporally comprehensive information on beach changes, will gradually displace the beach profile network.
The Council’s data set has recently been merged with a NIWA data set for the same sites, considerably increasing the data set. However, availability of the data collected by NIWA may be restricted.
The RICODA database, which was used to store data on beach profiles, is no longer available.
The design of the data collection is a function of the Land, Wetlands & Coasts Programme while the collection of data and archive is a function of the Environmental Monitoring Programme.

Abstract: |
Site locations (aerial photographs and finder diagrams), and surveyed profiles of beach-perpendicular transects recorded over time. |
Statement: |
All profiles have been obtained from beaches on the Eastern Coromandel Peninsula (Port Jackson to Whiritoa inclusive) - apart from one site on the western side (Te Puru School).
At present, the beach profiles network is primarily being used to determine the cut and fill envelope for eastern Coromandel beaches. |
Other Information: |
Surveying of sites by level and staff and other techniques (e.g. Emery pole) from established beach markers. Transects generally less than 200 meters long. Echo sounding data at some sites for up to two kilometers off shore. Spacing of profiles along the beach is determined by potential damage to properties on the frontal dune (McMullan, 1995)
Survey area delineated by the box S09: 190-230 and T12: 690-300.
Positional accuracy: X, Y, Z co-ordinates are for benchmarks.
This data Network initiated in 1978 by the Hauraki Catchment Board. Two to three surveys of most sites between 1978 and 1990. More data is available for a few sites where there were local issues. Since 1990, most sites have been surveyed at least once every two years, and some sites 2-3 times/year.
Field measurements have an accuracy of 5 - 10 centimeters. Mistakes are checked for by over plotting. Annual quality assurance checks.
Much of the data inherited from Hauraki Catchment Board was neither checked nor archived. The data is subject to uncertainties due to changes in beach-markers and unclear field notes. Much of this data has now been checked/corrected and archived, but some uncertainties remain relating to data at some sites.
The frequency of the surveys since 1978 and the length of the record are such that it is not presently a useful/reliable means of assessing long-term trends in shoreline movements. However, the data at a few sites might be helpful in this regard - if used as an adjunct to other data (e.g. photogrammetric data on shoreline changes from aerial photographs).
A limitation of the data set is that most sites utilize independent local datums - Moturiki datum has not yet been carried around the Coromandel Peninsula. However, there are local msl datums in some localities (e.g. Mercury Bay).
Data form is digital, printed graphs, aerial photos locating site, finder diagrams. Surveys are stored in Excel. Avaliable in NZMG on GIS Layer. See EWDOCS# 717983
The RICODA database is no longer maintained and has been replaced by a quality assured EXCEL database.

Data pre-dating 1990 (i.e. that inherited from predecessor bodies) is not available until various uncertainties in this data have been checked/corrected. All data collected since then is available without restriction. Much of the data pre-dating 1990 will be available from July 2002. |
