This dataset comprises several GIS layers and image backdrops derived from Waikato Regional Council’s 100m Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The elevation layer summarises a range of elevations and the aspect layer summarises a range of aspects. The purpose of these layers is for GeoMedia users to be able to display and analyse elevation and aspect information. Image backdrops derived from the 100m DEM are a shaded relief image backdrop and hypsometrically tinted image. These images are designed to provide contextual information for display behind other GIS datasets. |

**** Content of Data Set:
Digital Elevation Model -
This is the underlying dataset for the derived elevation and aspect layers. It is not directly accessible through Geomedia because the amount of data contained makes it suitable only for storage in a raster or grid format. The DEM can be accessed directly using raster GIS including Intergraph’s Terrain Analysis (MTA), Mfworks or ERMapper Image Analysis.
Elevation GIS Feature -
Each feature represents a range of elevations extracted from the DEM and converted into a polygon format suitable for display and analysis in Geomedia. The range varies depending on elevation, with small increments for the lowest elevations and large increments for the highest. The ranges for the polygons are: 0-25m, 25-50m, 50-100m, 100-200m, 200-300m, 300-500m, 500-800m, 800-1300m, 1300-1800m and >1800m. Each polygon has attributes of minimum and maximum elevation as well as the planar area of the polygon.
Aspect GIS Feature -
Each feature represents a range of aspects calculated from the DEM and converted into a polygon format suitable for display and analysis in Geomedia. The increments are shown in 8 primary directions: N (337.6 to 22.5 degrees), NE (22.6 to 67.5 degrees), E (67.6 to 112.5 degrees), SE (112.6 to 157.5 degrees), S (157.6 to 202.5 degrees), SW (202.6 to 247.5 degrees), W (247.6 to 292.5 degrees), NW (292.6 to 337.5 degrees) and Horizontal for no aspect. Each polygon has attributes of minimum and maximum aspect in degrees and a compass for the middle of each aspect as well as planar area of each polygon.
Shaded Relief Image Backdrop -
This image backdrop is developed by using a 3x3 cell filter over the DEM to simulate lighting from a low sun elevation and create the impression of relief shading.
Hypsometrically tinted Image Backdrop -
Each 100m cell on the DEM is coloured depending on height using equivalent colours as is used on topographic maps (e.g. green for low lying areas, white for permanent snow covered mountains). Lakes (from the 1:50,000 data set) are filled with light blue.
*** Data Acquisition History:
Period and Frequency of Record -
All contour and spot height data was sourced in 1998. The DEM was rebuilt in 1999 by Intergraph Corporation on contract to Waikato Regional Council. No updates of this source information, rebuilding of the Digital Elevation Model or reprocessing of the derived products are planned.
Data Acquisition Method(s) -
The 100m DEM was built from the contour and spot height data under contract to Intergraph using their Modular Terrain Analyst (MTA) Software. All feature classes and image backdrops were derived from this 100m DEM.
The elevation feature class was derived by classifying the DEM elevations into the appropriate groups (refer to this metadata “Content of Data Set:”). Polygon boundaries are generated automatically where there is a change from one elevation class to another. Summary statistics and planar area are calculated automatically and attached to the feature.
Aspect was derived by using the elevation data of neighbouring cells to determine which direction a cell is facing. Polygon boundaries are generated and summary statistics calculated automatically.

Data Quality -
Not Stated.
Attribute Accuracy -
Elevation: Unverified by quantitative analysis, but a sample of elevation polygons distributed across the region agree visually with the DEM elevations and the NZMS 260 series topographical maps. The elevation polygon boundaries also agree visually with an image of elevation classes created independently.
Aspect: Unverified by quantitative analysis but a visual analysis overlaying the aspect polygons on an aspect image shows that there is a strong correlation between the aspect polygon boundaries and the image. This gives confidence that the aspect polygons reflect the true aspect (as derived from the DEM).

Completeness - The datasets and images have complete regional coverage. All polygons have attributes.
