Geothermal resistivity contours at 500m and 1000m depth for the area covered by NZMS260 map sheets T17, U16 and U17. |
Statement: |
This dataset is an extract of the Geothermal Systems of New Zealand database held by the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS). This data is part of the Electrical Resistivity database containing 30,000 resistivity measurements made using Schlumberger (and equivalent) electrode arrays. This data is used to help delineate geothermal systems and provide information on the extent of thermal water.
This data was supplied to WRC in ~1997/8 for use in State of the Environment reporting (see Figure 33 on pg 111 of the SoE, 1998) and as a major factor in determining geothermal system boundaries in the Waikato Regional Plan (see Waikato Regional Policy Statement Section 7.9 for maps, see Staff Report on Module 7 Submissions for the Waikato Regional Plan: Appendix 4, WRC Document #609184 for description of methods, data and information used in setting the boundaries).
WRC Geothermal Scientists may be requesting more recent Electrical Resistivity Data from GNS in the future. |

The Geothermal Resistivity Contours are based on an extract of the Electrical Resistivity database containing 30,000 resistivity measurements received from GNS in 1997/98.
The contours were digitised in-house by WRC off GNS hard copy maps. The data extends over the area of NZMS260 map sheets T17 (part), U16 and U17. The data was first loaded into the WRC corporate oracle spatial database in June 2005.

The contours are based on a grid that shows the regional scale resistivity and is an interpolation of the data measurements. As the interpolation process has caused smoothing, this data should not be used for detailed studies of features or geothermal field boundaries. In-depth studies require reference to the measured data points.
The Data quality is high for intended use. Completeness and logical consistency is as supplied.
