LiDAR Image Mosaic - GIS Layer
File ID: |

Hierarchy Level: |
dataset |
Abstract: |
LiDAR generated terrain images, hill and elevation shaded to emphasise terrain detail and elevation above sea level. |
Statement: |
The mosaic is complete for the LiDAR 2007/2008 and 2010/2011 data only. WRC has since completed more recent LiDAR surveys, as well as older surveys, such as Lake Taupo Foreshore 2006. As such an update of the layer is required.
These LiDAR representation images may be used for Rating, flood risk, determining fine terrain details, general map production.

Abstract: |
LiDAR image Mosaic - currently uses LiDAR 2007/2008 and 2010/2011 data only. |
Statement: |
Data accuracy, attribute accuracy, period and frequency of record, data quality is inherited from the source LiDAR 2007/2008 and 2010/2011 data datasets - please refer to respective metadata for further information.

Other Information: |
The LIDAR generated terrain images were hill and elevation shaded to emphasise terrain detail and elevation above sea level. The original LIDAR data was mosaiced and saved as ecw (Enhanced Compressed Wavelet) images following the LINZ Topo50 (NZTM 1:50,000) map sheet grid. ECW was chosen as the output image format for its small disk footprint, interoperability and its memory/display performance.
The elevation shading represented in the images uses intervals supplied by Integrated Catchment Management (previously known as RCS) and is designed to provide flooding potential information particularly around low lying elevations. Elevation shading was deemed unimportant above the 100m elevation and accordingly above this height the image is hill shaded only. Please refer to WRC DOC#2048556 for the colour ramp elevation intervals RGB colour model values.
Two sets of imagery were created and the source files are available on WRC’s corporate data share for interchange with third parties. The first set has all void (background) pixels set to white (as in GIS_IMAGES.LIDAR_MOSAIC_WRC) to support packages which do not support per pixel image transparency. The second set has all void pixels set to transparent for use in applications that do support this image transparency mode.
All source images have the following auxiliary files associated with them to support interoperability between geospatial applications: aux (ESRI), ers (ER Mapper), eww (ESRI), prj (ESRI), tab (MapInfo), xml (Manifold). In addition, the ecw image header also contains registration and projection information.
Data form in Digital Registered Images. Digital format: ER Mapper ECW (Enhanced Wavelet Compression) format RGB/RGBa images. Derived from the gridded data supplied with the LIDAR survey. |
